Functional Analyst, Student Information Systems
Student Information Systems (SIS) works with staff throughout the university to ensure accurate student data and efficient processes. The work is challenging and ever-changing, involves thoughtfully connecting people and technology and requires innovative thinking and clear communication.
Primary Purpose: To configure the university’s student information system (Banner Student) and complementary applications, including RMS Recruit, so they align with the university’s student administrative processes.
Nature of Work: Reporting to the Associate Registrar (SIS), the Functional Analyst works as part of a team to support and guide administrative and academic units in the collection, storage and retrieval of student information. The successful candidate will need to acquire a thorough knowledge and understanding of the Banner Student, RMS Recruit and Banner Document Management systems, related technologies, and relevant processes. The work is highly collaborative and involves regularly partnering with academic and administrative clients, as well as other functional and technical staff.
Typical Duties or Accountabilities:
- Understands and documents business requirements and processes and models them in Banner Student, RMS Recruit or Banner Document Management (BDM).
- Takes responsibility for the functional configuration of system modules and features.
- Investigates and resolves problems in Banner Student, RMS Recruit and BDM.
- Identifies and provides recommendations for possible procedure and / or policy changes and improvements to business units.
- Exercises discretionary decision making with respect to system configuration as well as resolutions to gaps in functionality.
- Develops and takes responsibility for the execution of test plans to ensure that Banner Student, RMS Recruit and BDM meet user needs as documented.
- Provides change management support to Banner Student, RMS Recruit and BDM end-users through training, documentation and second-line support efforts.
- Takes responsibility for the reliability, integrity and security of supported applications and data.
- Provides input into the definition of priorities and deadlines for the department's work.
- Meets deadlines and follows defined priorities.
- Helps with the development and maintenance of student reporting infrastructure through functional specification and testing.
- Develops and executes simple reports and queries using Crystal Reports or similar tools, as required.
- Maintains productive and professional working relationships with other SIS staff members.
- Works in conjunction with other project teams as required during configuration, implementation and support efforts.
- Develops and maintains excellent working relationships with academic and administrative colleagues at all levels.
Education: A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline.
Experience: A minimum of three years of work experience in:
- student related processes.
- functional configuration of a large ERP system.
- providing support and training to end users of a student information system.
- producing and maintaining procedures manuals for use by staff.
- running reports and queries from a student information system.
Experience in the use of the Ellucian Banner Student product, the Ellucian Recruit Customer Relationship Management system, Banner Document Management, the Ellucian Degree Works product and Crystal Reports would be an asset.
Skills: Demonstrated detailed knowledge of university and college processes related to student aid, recruitment, admissions, transfer credit, registration and document management. Demonstrated familiarity with processes related to student accounts, exams, graduation decisions, grades, faculty actions, advising, course offerings and transcript production. Ability to work effectively as part of a team. Ability to acquire new skills quickly. Enthusiasm for new challenges and an ability to share that enthusiasm with others. Strong organization skills. Demonstrated ability to set priorities and work to deadlines. Highly effective written and verbal communication skills. Ability to create and deliver user-friendly presentations of complex material. Ability to think creatively and find innovative solutions. Change management and process re-engineering skills. An understanding of the roles of administrative staff, academic staff, faculty and students in recording and accessing student information would be a strong asset.
