Mandate
Reporting to the Associate University Librarian (AUL) and working closely with the Head, Engagement and Learning (HEL) and the Library Instruction & Research Services Working Group (LIRSWG), the Engagement and Learning Coordinator (ELC) manages the design, coordination, and continuous improvement of a structured, sustainable program of general library instruction. They also provide instructional design and project management capacity that strengthens the Libraries' broader engagement and learning programming. Through their support of students’ academic achievement, social engagement and career readiness, these activities support the Libraries’ contributions to UVic’s Digital Learning Plan, Strategic Enrolment Management Plan and Academic Action Plan.
Library instruction is the provision of learning experiences that help students and other library users develop the skills and knowledge to effectively find, evaluate, use, create and share information for academic, professional and lifelong learning. For the purposes of this position, “general library instruction” means foundational, non-specialized teaching - for example required course integration, general workshops and orientation sessions.
Library engagement is the intentional building of meaningful connections between the library and its communities through programs, services, partnerships and interactions that foster participation, belonging, learning and mutual benefit.
Objectives
- Help create, maintain and deliver effective, sustainable and inclusive programs for general library instruction and student engagement in the Libraries.
- Develop collaborative relationships with librarians, instructors, students and campus partners to demonstrate and strengthen the connection between library instruction and student success.
- Develop and maintain an effective framework for assessing library instruction and engagement to support evidence-based decision making and continuous improvement.
Requirements
This position requires a level of education, training, and experience equivalent to a master’s degree in education, instructional design or a related discipline, plus a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- Knowledge of, or experience with, the principles and applied practice of instructional design and curriculum integration or mapping, especially in a post-secondary context.
- Understanding of the best practices and principles of pedagogy, accessibility and digital and information literacy as they apply in a post-secondary context.
- Experience with program assessment, including the design of assessment instruments, collection and analysis of assessment data, and communication of findings.
- Experience creating effective, accessible instructional materials, including lesson plans and tutorials.
- Experience with educational technology tools including learning management systems, online tutorial creation platforms, web authoring tools and digital exhibit platforms.
- Understanding of key issues relating to academic integrity, especially as it relates to emerging technologies in a post-secondary context.
- Proven project management and organizational expertise, with a record of meeting deadlines and producing high-quality deliverables.
- Ability to collaborate, build and maintain positive relationships with diverse individuals and work effectively both independently and in a team environment.
- Ability to effectively hire, manage and support term and casual student employees.
