Company Description Verdyn is a full-cycle energy solutions provider focused on modernizing how energy products and services are designed, delivered, and maintained. The organization is driven by a mission to leapfrog traditional energy delivery models and bring advanced, integrated solutions into the present. Verdyn works across the energy value chain, combining engineering, technology, and operations expertise to create resilient, efficient systems. Team members collaborate in a dynamic environment where innovation, safety, and sustainability are central to the company’s work and culture.
Role Description The Embedded Firmware Engineer - Energy Storage (Controls & Connectivity) will design, implement, and maintain embedded software for Verdyn’s energy storage products and control systems.
Day-to-day responsibilities include developing firmware for microcontroller-based platforms, implementing and testing control algorithms, managing connectivity interfaces, and integrating firmware with hardware components. The role involves debugging and optimizing embedded systems, collaborating with electrical and software engineering teams, participating in design reviews, and writing clear technical documentation.
This is a full-time, on-site role based in Oakville, ON, requiring close coordination with cross-functional teams to ensure reliable, safe, and high-performance energy storage solutions.
What you'll do at Verdyn:
- Develop firmware for module- and rack-level super-capacitor control boards on TI C2000 real-time MCUs: monitoring, measurement, balancing, protection and rack-level aggregation. - Implement distributed control and coordination across the module → rack hierarchy.
- Build and optimize communication over Beckhoff TwinCAT / EtherCAT, plus Modbus and CAN / CAN-FD. Develop control for the rack's Infineon SiC power-conversion stage, with the hardware team.
- Build the secure over-the-air firmware-update path: signed images, secure boot, root of trust, anti-rollback, and encrypted + authenticated update channels.
- Apply OT/grid cybersecurity (IEC 62443) across the control-board software and update infrastructure; bring up boards and run unit, integration and HIL testing.
Qualifications
- Candidates should possess strong Embedded Software and Software Development skills, including experience with C/C++ and real-time embedded systems.
- Candidates should possess solid Electrical Engineering knowledge, with familiarity in power electronics, battery systems, and hardware–firmware integration.
- Candidates should possess experience with ARM Architecture, including development on ARM-based microcontrollers and associated toolchains.
- Candidates should possess advanced Debugging skills for embedded platforms, using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, in-circuit debuggers, and profiling tools.
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
- Experience in energy storage, industrial controls, or IoT connectivity (CAN, Modbus, Ethernet, wireless protocols) is highly beneficial.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, follow safety standards, and work effectively with multidisciplinary teams on-site.
- Strong problem-solving abilities, clear written and verbal communication, and a collaborative approach to product development.
An ideal candidate:
- 5+ years of in-industry embedded firmware in C/C++ on microcontrollers (TI C2000 or similar), with bare-metal and RTOS work.
- A real-time industrial bus in production
- EtherCAT via Beckhoff TwinCAT strongly preferred, or a comparable bus plus a willingness to pick up TwinCAT.
- Secure firmware-update experience (signed/OTA, secure boot, bootloaders) and a working understanding of embedded cybersecurity.
- CAN / CAN-FD and Modbus; hands-on hardware bring-up and hardware–software integration.
- A degree in Computer, Electrical or Embedded Systems Engineering, or equivalent experience.
