Salary Range: $80,000-$100,000

While the full range represents the potential earnings for the role, it is not typical for new hires to start at the top of the range. Placement within the range is based on qualifications, experience, and alignment with internal equity.
Westerkirk Capital Inc. (‘WCI’), a private investment company based in Victoria, BC is seeking an Investment Analyst, Alternative Assets. The organization is a single-family office managing assets via internal direct and third-party/external managers across a variety of portfolios and asset classes including fixed income, public equity, private equity, hedge funds, infrastructure, and real estate.
The Investment Analyst, Alternative Assets will be involved in business analysis, due diligence, investment selection, and investment reporting. In addition, the successful incumbent will play a key role in assisting with the development of a growing investment team and supporting the build-out of key investment infrastructure elements for our portfolios and platforms.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Supporting the Senior Portfolio Manager, Alternative Investments, and the broader Alternative Investments team in the following key areas:
- Supporting the ongoing development, implementation, and execution of the alternative assets strategy.
- Assisting in the oversight of investments across alternative asset classes (private equity, venture, infrastructure), including the engagement and coordination of external consultants and the onboarding of approved managers.
- Challenging and assisting in the development of investment selection frameworks and processes.
- Sourcing, researching, and supporting the recommendation of investment opportunities in private markets, including primary fund commitments and co-investments.
- Supporting the underwriting process for new opportunities, including (i) financial and business modelling; (ii) due diligence of investment opportunities; (iii) preparing investment memos; and (iv) collaborating with other team members on investment research.
- Supporting the monitoring of existing fund commitments and co-investments to ensure ongoing alignment with strategy and stated goals.
- Preparing analysis and reporting on the performance of existing investments.
- Collaborating on proposals to enhance the risk-adjusted performance of the overall alternative assets portfolio, with attention to costs, risks, and after-tax returns.
- Collaborating with Finance, Legal, Investment Operations, and external professionals on issues related to financial accounting, onboarding, and reporting of Westerkirk’s investments.
- Preparing and presenting ad hoc analysis and research.
QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Bachelor's Degree with a minimum two years of finance, investing, and/or consulting experience.
- Progress towards CIM, CFA, CPA, CBV, or CAIA designations is an asset.
- Excellent quantitative, analytical, financial modelling, problem solving and organizational skills.
- Rigorous attention to detail.
- Knowledge of portfolio management and risk management principles and practices.
- Service-oriented, proactive self-starter, comfortable managing multiple priorities.
- Ability to maintain privacy and confidentiality at all times, exercise diplomacy, discretion and respect boundaries.
- Excellent communication (both written and verbal) and solid interpersonal skills that allow one to work effectively in a diverse working environment.
