Summary of Role
We are currently looking for a Tax, Accounting and Business Advisory Manager. The ideal candidate would be a well-rounded tax and accounting professional who combines strong technical expertise with a genuine business advisory mindset. They understand that their role extends beyond compliance work and are able to see the bigger picture - understanding a client’s objectives, identifying opportunities and risks, and providing practical, commercially sound advice that helps clients make informed business decisions.
As a trusted advisor and relationship manager, this candidate would lead a high-performing team, build strong client relationships and become a valued resource whom clients seek out when faced with important business decisions. They are motivated to build and grow a practice, rather than just manage one. Working closely with a Partner, they will gain exposure to broader client, business development and firm management responsibilities, providing an opportunity to develop the skills and experience required for future senior leadership.
The ideal candidate would have a strong understanding of the business and economic drivers of a professional services firm.They are proactive, commercially minded and committed to identifying opportunities to grow, improve and strengthen the firm. They would take an entrepreneurial approach to their role and look for ways to contribute to the success of the firm, its clients and its people.
Summary of Responsibilities
Tax & Advisory
- Act as a trusted advisor to owner-managed businesses, providing accounting, tax, and business advice.
- Lead and review complex Canadian corporate tax compliance, including T2, T106, T1134, T3, tax provisions, and related filings.
- Identify and implement tax planning and tax-efficient strategies, including corporate reorganizations, M&A, compensation strategies, surplus calculations, foreign tax credits, and withholding tax.
- Advise on international, cross-border, and offshore tax matters, as well as CRA audits, assessments, objections, and other tax issues.
- Analyze complex tax matters and provide practical recommendations aligned with clients’ business objectives.
- Maintain current knowledge of Canadian tax legislation, CRA policies, and applicable accounting and tax standards.
Engagement & File Management
- Manage complex accounting and tax engagements from planning through completion, ensuring quality, accuracy, and timely delivery.
- Prepare and review engagement planning documents in accordance with the Firm’s risk-based approach.
- Coordinate client information, delegate work, and supervise staff throughout engagements.
- Review working papers, financial statements, tax returns, and other client deliverables; resolve outstanding issues and escalate significant matters and recommendations to the Partner.
- Manage multiple engagements and competing deadlines while maintaining strong organization and file management.
Leadership & Staff Development
- Lead, mentor, and coach professional staff, providing guidance, constructive feedback, and support for ongoing career development.
- Foster a collaborative and professional team environment that supports employee development and high-quality client service.
- Delegate sections of the file to staff members based on their knowledge, experience and ongoing professional development needs.
- Supervise and train staff throughout engagements, providing guidance, direction, and constructive feedback on their work.
- Advise Partner of any significant issues or engagement findings, along with recommendations for their resolution.
- Review and amend as necessary the financial statements, notes, attached schedules, management letters, tax returns and any other documents to be issued to the client.
Practice Management & Internal Firm Operations
- Monitoring team utilization and productivity
- Monitoring engagement profitability
- Participating in fee discussions and proposals
- Understanding the relationship between time spent, value delivered and fees charged
- Managing seasonal workload and capacity
- Identifying opportunities to improve efficiency and leverage
- Assisting with resource planning and staffing
- Managing WIP, billing, realization and recovery
- Understanding engagement budgets and overall economics
Business Development & Firm Growth
- Attending client meetings and business development meetings
- Participating in networking and industry events
- Attending firm-sponsored events and marketing initiatives
- Developing relationships with lawyers, bankers, wealth advisors, lenders and other professional advisors
- Identifying opportunities with existing clients
- Participating in proposals and new-business opportunities
Summary of Experience
- 7–10 years of public accounting experience
Requirements:
- Completion of a University degree
- Canadian Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation, an asset
- Demonstrated experience with complex corporate and personal tax matters and related advisory services
- Excellent organization and file management skills, with the ability to manage multiple engagements and competing deadlines
- Proven experience leading engagements, reviewing staff work, and mentoring and coaching professional teams
- Strong client relationship, advisory, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- Proficiency with CaseWare, iFirm, Taxprep, QuickBooks, and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook)
Job Details
- Job Vacancy Status: New Vacancy
- Hours of Work: 35 hours standard/minimum work week; the role requires overtime as necessary to meet operational and professional requirements, especially from February to June.
- Location: 201 Bridgeland Ave, North York, Hybrid
- Salary: $120,000- $160,000
- Compensation placement will be based on depth of experience, demonstrated skill set, and alignment with the responsibilities of the role.
