American Express Canada is seeking a Credit Risk Analyst to support responsible growth and sound customer outcomes across the consumer and small business portfolios. The analyst will primarily develop, evaluate, and monitor strategies for Initial Line Assignment on new accounts and proactive and reactive line-increase decisions for existing customers. The role combines data-driven analysis, risk-return optimization, strong governance, and cross-functional partnership to ensure credit-line decisions are appropriate, sustainable, compliant with applicable requirements, and aligned with the Bank’s risk appetite.
Responsibilities
- Develop and enhance Initial Line Assignment strategies for new accounts using application information, internal data, credit bureau data, risk scores, debt capacity, and other relevant attributes.
- Design and manage proactive and reactive line-increase strategies for existing customers, incorporating risk eligibility, income, tenure, spending, repayment behavior, exposure, and affordability considerations.
- Evaluate credit-line proposals through risk-adjusted profitability, customer appropriateness, and sustainable lending lenses while maintaining alignment with approved risk appetite, policies, procedures, and authority levels.
- Conduct portfolio analytics, segmentation, and performance monitoring to assess approval rates, line sizes, utilization, delinquency, write-offs, and other key outcomes.
- Identify emerging risks, trends, and opportunities; recommend changes to decision rules, models, cut-offs, caps, suppressions, and other strategy parameters.
- Prepare clear documentation, management reporting, and governance materials, including rationale, impact assessments, control considerations, and timely escalation of material trends or exceptions.
- Partner with Decision Science, Centre of Excellence, Technology, Product, Finance, Compliance, Legal, Credit Operations, and other stakeholders to implement strategies accurately and deliver required capabilities.
- Support validation, testing, implementation, and post-launch monitoring of systematic decision strategies and related controls.
- Maintain strong process discipline and data quality, and contribute to policy, procedure, audit, regulatory, and control activities.
- Translate complex analysis into concise recommendations for senior leaders and influence decisions through fact-based insights.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in quantitative or business discipline such as Statistics, Economics, Finance, Mathematics, Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field; advanced degree is an asset.
- Experience in credit risk management, underwriting, lending strategy, customer management, portfolio analytics, or a related financial-services discipline.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret large datasets, identify meaningful patterns, and convert findings into practical risk strategies.
- Proficiency with analytical tools such as SQL, Python, R, or equivalent, together with advanced Excel skills; experience with data visualization tools is an asset.
- Understanding of credit bureau information, risk scores, underwriting concepts, line assignment, affordability or debt-capacity considerations, and portfolio performance metrics.
- Ability to balance growth, profitability, customer experience, and credit risk within established governance and regulatory requirements.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain analytical findings and recommendations to technical and non-technical audiences.
