Here’s an opportunity to take the editorial lead at a respected East Toronto non-profit local news organization that has been covering its communities since 1972.
We’re looking for an editor who can make confident editorial decisions, lead strong local journalism and work closely with reporters, contributors and the community.
We also take great pride in mentoring emerging journalists and being a teaching newsroom.
This is a hands-on newsroom leadership role for someone who knows local journalism has a future and wants to help build it.
Our journalism is increasingly digital-first, with stories published throughout the week at BeachMetro.com and shared through our newsletter and social channels. At the same time, our free newspaper remains at the heart of what we do, with more than 22,000 copies distributed throughout east Toronto every two weeks by an incredible network of local volunteers.
We’re looking for a professional editor who will help lead the continued development of how we report, tell and distribute local stories across print, web, newsletters, social media and video while using analytics and audience feedback to better understand how readers engage with our journalism and where we can serve them better.
Our business is supported by local advertisers, along with a growing community of supporters who contribute through our fundraising campaigns and community events.
As a Qualified Canadian Journalism Organization (QCJO), we are committed to producing free, original local journalism.
This is a hybrid position combining regular work in our east Toronto newsroom, reporting in the community and some flexibility to work from home.
About the Job:
The editor sets editorial priorities, generates story ideas and plans coverage across print and digital platforms. The role includes assigning and editing stories, as well as reporting and writing stories and covering elections. The editor works with Beach Metro columnists and contributors maintaining editorial authority over story selection, editing, headlines, photographs and presentation while upholding Beach Metro’s standards for accuracy, fairness, ethics and editorial integrity.
