Build a shared home based on choice, respect, and belonging
Breton Ability is recruiting prospective HomeShare Providers throughout Cape Breton. HomeShare is a voluntary, person-directed option where an adult receiving support through the Nova Scotia Disability Support Program and an approved provider share a home. A participant may move into the provider’s home, or the provider may move into the participant’s home.
The opportunity
Every arrangement is different. The participant’s preferences, routines, identity, relationships, goals and agreed-upon support needs guide the match. A HomeShare arrangement moves forward only when the participant and provider both make an informed and voluntary decision.
What You May Support
- Daily living, household routines, meals and agreed personal or health-related support.
- Relationships, community participation, employment, education, recreation and appointments.
- Accessible information, supported decision-making, informed choice and reasonable positive risk-taking.
- Emergency response, required documentation and regular program check-ins.
What We Are Looking For
- Respect for the rights, privacy, identity, relationships and independence of people with disabilities.
- A stable, inclusive and welcoming shared-home environment.
- Open communication, sound judgment and a commitment to the least restrictive approach.
- Willingness to complete training, follow program standards and participate in monitoring.
- Previous disability support experience is an asset but is not required.
Training, Support And Compensation
Approved providers receive orientation, participant-specific training, ongoing guidance, regular check-ins, urgent support and respite in accordance with the HomeShare program and service agreement. Compensation reflects the participant’s agreed level of support and the service agreement. This is a contracted HomeShare Provider opportunity and should not be understood as conventional employment unless formally confirmed.
Screening and matching
Applicants complete a detailed approval process that may include interviews, references, Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Checks, home visits, a home study and safety review, conversations with adult household members, First Aid and CPR, and required training. Approval does not guarantee an immediate match.
Rights-based practice: Providers must respect informed consent and refusal, supported decision-making, dignity of risk, privacy, culture, identity, personal space and access to family, friends, advocates, healthcare and community connections.
