Job Description Summary:
Under the direction of the Supervisor, the Legal Studies Collection Assistant will support a project to organize and improve access to the School of Legal Studies' collection of legal research materials. This position provides a practical learning opportunity for a student interested in legal research, information management, and the organization of legal resources.
The successful candidate will assist with organizing, inventorying, and arranging legal research materials, including case reporters, legislation, and related legal reference resources maintained by the School of Legal Studies. Through this work, the student will gain experience applying principles of legal research and information organization in an academic setting while contributing to a defined collection-management project.
This is a term-based student position intended to provide meaningful work experience that complements the student's academic studies.
Job Description:
In this role, the student will:
- Unpack, sort, organize, and shelve legal research materials received by the School of Legal Studies, arranging resources according to established instructions to support the accessibility and organization of the collection.
- Apply best practices when shelving the legal collection. This includes Identifying gaps, duplicates, or organizational issues within the collection and report findings to the supervisor
- Maintain accurate records of completed work and project progress
- Provide regular status updates, including photographs where appropriate
- Apply safe work practices when handling materials and moving items
- Work independently while following established project guidelines
- Attend meetings with the supervisor, either virtually or in person
- Ensure collection materials and designated workspaces remain secure during assigned work periods
- Perform related project duties consistent with the objectives of the position
Requirements
- Enrolled as a current student at Capilano University for the duration of the contract and must be in a good academic standing. Good standing is defined as having no current notations regarding academic standing, student conduct or outstanding fees.
- Must have completed or be enrolled in LAW 210, or an equivalent legal research course.
- Must not overlap or replace duties normally performed by MoveUP and/or faculty member(s).
- Energetic, hardworking, punctual and reliable individual with the ability to take initiative.
- Be able to lift up to 40 lbs.

Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for student employment, a student must be in good academic standing with the University. Good standing is defined as having a GPA of 2.0 and no current notations regarding academic standing, student conduct or outstanding fees per policy S2003-003 Academic Standing, a copy of which can be found on the University's website.
Domestic students must be enrolled in, and maintain, a minimum of two or more (6 credits) courses at Capilano University throughout the work term; international students must: during the fall and winter semesters, be enrolled in, and maintain, a minimum of 9 credits at Capilano University throughout the work term; have a valid Study Permit.
Student employees are not required to be enrolled in courses during the summer term to maintain eligibility for employment; however, they must have been enrolled in a minimum of six credits during the preceding spring term. Furthermore, international students must abide by the terms of their work or study visas.
Students who complete their studies in the spring or summer terms may have their appointments extended until August 31 of the same year; students who complete their studies in the fall term may have their appointments extended until December 31 of the same year.
