Recruiting on behalf of Cynergy Composites
Job Overview
Cynergy Composites manufactures carbon fibre components for automotive, motorsport, marine and defence projects. Based in Strathroy, we are a small team working on a variety of custom parts, prototypes and tooling.
We are looking for a detail-oriented CNC Programmer/Operator to program and operate our Thermwood 5-axis router to machine 3D wooden patterns used in composite tooling.
About the role
This position combines Mastercam programming with hands-on work at the machine. You will work from completed CAD files, develop toolpaths, set up each job, monitor machining and check the finished pattern.
Much of the work involves individual patterns rather than repeat production runs. You will need to think through the machining approach, make adjustments as a job progresses and take responsibility for the finished result.
You will work alongside our engineering and shop team, with support as you learn Cynergy’s equipment and processes. You should already be able to create CNC programs in Mastercam and apply that knowledge to practical machining work.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Programming: Create CNC programs and toolpaths in Mastercam from completed CAD files, planning the operations needed to machine each pattern.
- Setup and operation: Set up and operate the Thermwood 5-axis router, including tooling changes, machine adjustments and monitoring.
- Pattern machining: Machine wood and MDF patterns to the required dimensions and tolerances.
- Workholding: Plan stock layouts and prepare fixtures for larger patterns, working with the team as needed.
- Quality checks: Inspect completed work against CAD models and drawings, identifying and correcting discrepancies.
- Troubleshooting: Resolve programming, setup and machining issues, seeking technical input when needed.
- Job management: Coordinate programming and machine work to keep jobs moving from setup through final inspection.
- Equipment and documentation: Complete routine machine and tooling care, maintain a safe work area, and keep useful setup and process notes.
Skills and Qualifications
Required
- Mastercam capability: Ability to create your own CNC programs and toolpaths, beyond loading or making minor edits to existing programs.
- CNC fundamentals: A practical understanding of machining operations, tooling, setup, speeds and feeds.
- CAD interpretation: Ability to work from completed CAD files and drawings and understand the machining requirements.
- Accuracy and problem-solving: Ability to check your work, identify issues and make appropriate adjustments.
- Hands-on approach: Willingness to handle both programming and machine operation.
- Independent learning: Ability to apply feedback, document what you learn and work with increasing independence as you become familiar with the equipment.
Preferred
- 5-axis experience: Experience programming, setting up and operating a 5-axis CNC router or machining centre.
- Relevant materials and applications: Experience machining wood, MDF or foam, particularly patterns, plugs, models or tooling.
- Equipment familiarity: Experience with Thermwood CNC equipment.
- Additional software: Familiarity with SolidWorks or other 3D CAD software.
Working at Cynergy
- Compensation: Up to $40 per hour, based on demonstrated programming and machining capability.
- Schedule: Full-time day-shift work, with scheduling flexibility by arrangement and overtime opportunities.
- Varied projects: Work on patterns and tooling for automotive, motorsport, marine and defence applications.
- Vacation: Two weeks of vacation to start, with vacation pay paid on each paycheque.
- Training and equipment: Job-related safety and equipment training, plus work boot support.
- Team environment: Weekly team breakfasts and access to company London Knights tickets, subject to availability.
