Job Profile
Under the general supervision of the Foreman Electrician or other designated supervisor, the General Electrician performs skilled journey level electrical work in the maintenance, repair, testing, and construction of various types of electrical systems and equipment in accordance with standard trade practice and methods, Building Code requirements and as is appropriate for the journey designation required. Work may be performed in both interior and exterior locations and in varying environmental and working conditions.
As The General Electrician, You Will
- Locate, diagnose and rectify problems in electrical systems or equipment following malfunctions by consulting and acting on information from various sources and conducting appropriate tests.
- Install, connect and test electrical equipment and systems in accordance with instructions, plans and/or relevant codes.
- Locate and trace cables, conduits, pipes etc. as required to enable and associated with all required functions and responsibilities of the position.
- Perform preventative maintenance on electrical systems and equipment and adjusts, repairs, replaces and modifies components as required.
- Provide estimates for time and material required for system and equipment installation, modification and repair and orders and procures all required supplies in accordance with established procedures and authorized spending limits.
- Operate all equipment required to perform the duties of the position such as trenchers, bucket trucks, vans etc. including implementing and abiding by all necessary and required safety procedures and rules.
- Perform shift work and standby duties as required and respond to emergency situations including those outside required working hours and in inclement weather conditions.
- Provide supervision to Apprentices as assigned and acts as Lead Electrician as required and assigned.
- Initiate and coordinate work performed by Contractors to ensure compliance with Electrical Code, Departmental standards and approved drawings and/or specifications, including conducting on-site inspections in accordance with established procedure or as directed.
- Perform and supervise the proper safety clearance and lock out of electrical circuits and equipment.
- Attend training sessions to keep abreast of changing technology, new techniques; and systems and equipment installed and/or utilized in the Department.
- Maintain records of work performed, including computerized systems, and prepare reports on situations as required.
- Assist in orienting and training fellow employees, including demonstrating appropriate methods of completing tasks.
- Perform other related duties consistent with the classification as assigned.
Your Education And Qualifications Include
- Possession of, or ability to acquire within a reasonable time, a City of Winnipeg Electrical Contractor's License where relevant to a position's duties and as required by a Department.
- Demonstrated ability to make, update, read and interpret electrical drawings, specifications, charts, schematics and tables.
- Demonstrated ability to install, trouble-shoot, repair and maintain electrical systems and equipment.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within the Department and with individuals from other Departments, suppliers and contractors.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing and to maintain accurate records.
- Possess basic computer skills including use of word processing, e-mail, spreadsheet programs including an ability to utilize a work management information system or an ability to acquire same within a reasonable time.
- Ability to organize, supervise and train subordinate personnel.
- Working knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions and regulations applicable to the workplace.
- Thorough knowledge of the technical principles, trade practices and technology relevant to the Section/Branch's maintenance responsibilities, including the Canadian Electrical Code.
- Knowledge of and ability to work with multi phase high voltage (600 V or greater)electrical circuits, as required by a position's specific responsibilities.
- Knowledge of the principles and maintenance of control, relay and supervisory circuits and equipment; electronic and solid state circuits (PLC's).
- Knowledge of and familiarity with communications equipment/systems and installations, electrical control systems, solid state power supplies, as required by a position's specific responsibilities.

Conditions Of Employment
- The successful candidate must maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada. If the successful candidate possesses a work permit, it is their responsibility to ensure the permit remains valid.
- Valid Manitoba Journeyman's Electrician License and Inter-Provincial License (Class HC or HI).
- A Police Information Check satisfactory to the employer will be required from the successful candidate, at their expense.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Manitoba Class 5 Driver's Licence. The successful applicant will be required to provide a Notice of Driver's Licence In Force document upon request.
- Physically capable of performing the duties of the position including entering and working in confined spaces, erecting and working on ladders, scaffolds, buckets, etc.

Position Reports To: Supervisor - Electrical & Instrumentation Maintenance

- The successful applicant may be required to work in confined areas and hazardous locations where the wearing of self-contained breathing equipment is necessary due to lack of oxygen and/or presence of harmful gases.
- The successful applicant may be required to work standby duty on a sequential rotation basis.
- The successful applicant may be required to provide a vehicle for transportation while on City business, subject to the terms and conditions of the City Transportation Policy.
