The Registered Nurse (RN) functions as a valuable member working primarily within the CYMHP inpatient service, providing care to children and youth with complex mental health issues. The RN is key in leading patient care, including but not limited to, establishment of effective therapeutic relationships, utilization of developmentally appropriate approaches to care, mental status examination, crisis management, implementation and evaluation of therapeutic interventions, and coordination of services. The RN offers mental health teaching to children, youth and families, demonstrates knowledge of all Ontario legislation that guides mental health care and is responsible for meeting the medical needs of clients, including medication management and education. The RN contributes to new and ongoing research and quality assurance projects.
Current Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse
Evidence of a minimum of one (1) year recent experience within the past two (2) years in a high-acuity inpatient child and youth mental health setting as a Registered Nurse required
Current Certification in Crisis Intervention Training
Demonstrated expertise in crisis intervention, suicide risk assessment, behavioural de-escalation, and management of child and youth psychiatric emergencies
Demonstrated ability to provide care in a fast-paced, high-acuity inpatient mental health environment
Demonstrated clinical judgment in the assessment and management of children and adolescents with severe mental health, behavioural, and emotional disorders.
Demonstrated ability to respond effectively to behavioural escalation, self-harm, suicidal ideation, aggression, and other acute psychiatric presentations.
Demonstrated knowledge of child and youth mental health services
Demonstrated knowledge of psychopharmacology
Demonstrated knowledge in developmental psychology and psychopathology
Demonstrated knowledge of the mental health act, substitute decisions act, health care consent act, Personal Health Information Protection Act
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and establish therapeutic relationships with clients and team members
Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
Evidence of self-motivation, enthusiasm, and flexibility
