Professional Senior Engineering, Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC)
Job can be in Montreal or Toronto in a Hybrid position
What are your contributions to the team?
Reporting to the EMC Engineering Section Chief, the incumbent holds a multidisciplinary role within the Functional, Systems, Research and Technology department. The electromagnetic compatibility team ensures the safety of aircraft against internal and external electromagnetic threats, including electromagnetic interference (EMI), high-intensity radiated fields (HIRF), low-intensity radiated fields (LIRF), lightning, and electrostatic discharge. We ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements.
- Lead complex engineering assignments related to EMI, HIRF, LIRF, lightning, and electrostatics, including detailed analyses using similarity assessments, simulation, and/or analytical methods.
- Contribute to the resolution of electromagnetic issues to support EMC certification as well as production and in-service support activities.
- Define the scope of work and EMC effort for engineering projects, plan activities and milestones, flag technical risks, and execute tasks according to priorities.
- Analyze new or modified system or structure designs to assess technical impacts and propose EMC compliance approaches. Review and approve engineering documentation (test procedures, test and analysis reports). Verify compliance with certification regulations.
- Propose, drive, and support knowledge-capture initiatives. Support the identification and closure of knowledge and skills gaps.
- Mentor junior team members and interns. Act as EMC lead on projects, delegating and supervising the work of junior team members and interns. Train new employees on the EMC team.
- Support the creation and updating of technical requirements for EMI, HIRF, LIRF, lightning, and electrostatics.
- Provide EMC support to collaborative R&D teams (universities, industry) and drive activities to completion.
- Represent the EMC team at multidisciplinary meetings. Collaborate with internal and external suppliers, partners, and clients.
- Identify and implement improvements to processes and best practices.
- Support and witness EMC tests in Canada, the United States, and Europe as needed.
- Prepare and review aircraft-level test procedures (EMI, HIRF, LIRF, lightning, electrostatic discharge), oversee testing, and produce reports.
- Prepare the design compliance report for certification.
How to thrive in this role?
- You hold a degree in electrical engineering, engineering sciences, or physics.
- You have a minimum of eight (8) years of experience in EMC (professional and/or academic experience).
- You have a minimum of four (4) years of experience in EMC qualification/certification of systems or structures in the aerospace industry.
- You are familiar with relevant industry standards (RTCA/DO-160, SAE ARP) and have a good familiarity with airworthiness regulations (TCCA, FAA, EASA) and advisory materials relating to EMI, HIRF, LIRF, lightning, and electrostatics.
- You work well in a team and can leverage other disciplines (airworthiness, manufacturing, other engineering disciplines) to achieve common goals.
- You demonstrate engineering leadership and work autonomously.
- You are recognized as a specialist in at least one aspect of EMC and demonstrate depth and breadth of knowledge in other areas of EMC.
- You have participated in major project and design reviews and can identify technical, schedule, and budget risks related to EMC.
- You have excellent problem-solving skills and apply your expertise to find creative solutions within a multidisciplinary group.
- You have good oral and written communication skills. French is an asset.
- You have preferably participated in at least one (1) aircraft development program.
- Experience with electromagnetic simulation tools is an asset.
- Knowledge of the aviation sector is an asset.
