Job Description:
Our client is seeking a Controls Designer to design, program, commission, and support custom automated machinery from concept through implementation. This role involves PLC/HMI programming, machine commissioning, troubleshooting, and customer-site support. Approximately 10-20% travel is required throughout Canada and the United States (approx. 2x per year for 2 week durations)
Key Responsibilities
- Program and configure automated machinery using PLCs, HMIs, motion controls, and automation technologies.
- Test, troubleshoot, and debug machinery during assembly, startup, and commissioning.
- Collaborate with engineers, electricians, and machine builders to ensure equipment performs as designed.
- Install, commission, and support equipment at customer sites.
- Train customers on machine operation and maintain project documentation.
Must-Have Requirements:
- 3-5+ years of controls engineering, automation engineering, or related experience.
- Experience designing and programming custom automated machinery from concept through commissioning.
- Strong PLC and HMI programming experience, preferably with Allen-Bradley and/or Omron.
- Experience owning automation projects throughout the full machine lifecycle.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel throughout North America.
Nice-to-Have Skills:
- Experience with robotics and machine vision systems.
- Experience wiring control panels and automated equipment.
- Experience programming servo/motion control systems.
- Experience implementing industrial communication networks.
- Experience with C++, VB, .NET, or database development.
- Experience mentoring junior engineers or technicians.
