Position: Oracle Application DBA (AWS Cloud Migration)
Location: Hybrid- Toronto, ON
Job type: Full-time/Permanent hiring
As the Oracle Application DBA & Cloud Migration Engineer, you will act as the core bridge between database administration, enterprise application development, and modern cloud architecture. This is a highly technical role requiring 8–10 years of robust Oracle Database Administration experience, featuring deep specialization in Oracle 12c/19c+ application support, advanced PL/SQL engineering, and high-scale performance tuning. You will not simply manage database installations; you will collaborate directly with engineering teams to optimize transactional code, lead database CI/CD release automation, and spearhead complex on-premises migrations to AWS cloud environments (Amazon RDS & Aurora).
Key Responsibilities
- Application Data Engineering: Collaborate daily with application development teams on physical data modeling, database schema designs, and the development/deployment of complex PL/SQL packages, procedures, triggers, and views.
- Performance Tuning & Diagnostics: Deeply analyze database execution plans, perform advanced SQL query tuning, and optimize complex index structures using AWR, ASH, and ADDM to eliminate bottlenecks in high-throughput transactional environments.
- Database Release Automation: Lead database release automation strategies, conduct comprehensive database code reviews, and manage schema migrations across all Dev, Staging, and Production environments using CI/CD pipelines.
- Production Telemetry & Troubleshooting: Monitor runtime database application health, identify lock contentions, proactively resolve deadlocks, and troubleshoot complex system latency issues.
- AWS Cloud Migrations: Partner closely with infrastructure and cloud engineering teams to design, test, and execute seamless on-premises to AWS cloud database migrations.
- Resiliency & Capacity Management: Participate actively in database capacity planning, architectural failover drills, and disaster recovery design strategy.
- Global Operations & Support: Coordinate efficiently with offshore teams for maintenance and production support activities. Provide support for critical production deployments and maintenance windows during weekend or "after-office" hours as required.
Required Qualifications
- Total Seniority: 8–10 years of dedicated, hands-on experience in Oracle Database Administration.
- Application DBA Specialization: 8+ years explicitly focused on Oracle Database (12c/19c+) application support, advanced PL/SQL programming, execution plan analysis, and system diagnostics.
- AWS Cloud Infrastructure: Practical administrative experience managing cloud-native database services, specifically Amazon RDS (Oracle/PostgreSQL) and Amazon Aurora.
- PostgreSQL Ecosystem: Concrete working knowledge of PostgreSQL architecture, schema design models, and query performance optimization.
- Migration Track Record: Proven experience migrating large-scale on-premises databases to AWS cloud ecosystems using utilities like AWS DMS (Database Migration Service), SCT (Schema Conversion Tool), or native export tools.
- CI/CD & Delivery: Strong background integrating database schema changes into automated CI/CD deployment pipelines within Agile engineering teams.
Preferred Skills (Added Advantage)
- Hands-on experience with Oracle Exadata administration and optimization features (Smart Scan, Hybrid Columnar Compression / HCC).
- Proficiency in infrastructure automation using Shell Scripting (Bash) and Python.
- Active professional certifications: AWS Certified Database – Specialty or advanced Oracle credentials.
