Brief Overview:
Reporting to the Genealogical Manager and Registrar, the Genealogist serves as the subject matter expert for the Métis Nation–Saskatchewan (MN–S) Citizenship Registry. This role leads advanced genealogical research to verify Métis ancestry, supports complex citizenship decisions, and helps ensure Registry processes are accurate, consistent, and based on reliable historical evidence.
The Genealogist provides technical leadership, oversees quality assurance, supports policy development, mentors genealogy staff, and works with internal and external partners to maintain professional genealogical standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead advanced genealogical research in accordance with MN-S Registry Policies, professional standards, and ethical practices.
- Conduct and review research to support citizenship applications, harvesting rights, appeals, Manitoba Scrip applications, and other Registry initiatives.
- Analyze and evaluate historical records to verify Métis ancestry and citizenship eligibility.
- Research historical sources, including church, census, land, court, vital statistics, Hudson's Bay Company, Manitoba Scrip, and other archival records.
- Review and validate genealogical research completed by Registry Research staff to ensure accuracy, consistency, and compliance with established standards.
- Prepare technical research reports, evidence summaries, family trees, and recommendations to support citizenship decisions.
- Preparing meticulous research to ensure all citizens meet the eligibility of the MN-S criteria.
- Provide expert advice and recommendations to the Genealogical Manager and Registrar on complex research findings and eligibility decisions.
- Maintain the confidentiality, integrity, and security of genealogical records and research databases.
- Identify and resolve research discrepancies while ensuring documentation is accurate, complete, and defensible.
- Supervise, mentor, coach, and support genealogy staff while promoting professional development and consistent research practices.
- Coordinate workloads, monitor research priorities, and support operational planning.
- Build collaborative relationships with historians, archivists, genealogists, Indigenous organizations, government agencies, and other partners.
- Represent the Registry by participating in presentations, workshops, and community engagement activities as required.
- Stay current with emerging genealogical research methods and recommend improvements to research practices.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Extensive knowledge of Métis history, culture, genealogy, and citizenship requirements.
- Advanced knowledge of genealogical research methods, documentation standards, and evidence evaluation.
- Strong analytical, investigative, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to de-escalate situations of a sensitive matter.
- Knowledge of archival research methods and historical records management.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat, genealogical databases, and electronic records management systems.
- Leadership, coaching, mentoring, and team development skills.
- Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain confidentiality when handling sensitive information.
- Commitment to professionalism, integrity, cultural competency, and respectful engagement with Métis citizens and communities.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Indigenous Studies, Canadian History, Genealogy, Anthropology, Archival Studies, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Professional accreditation through the Saskatchewan Genealogical Society or another recognized genealogical organization.
- Minimum five (5) years of experience conducting advanced genealogical, historical, or lineage research, including complex case files.
- Experience interpreting historical records and preparing detailed genealogical research reports.
- Previous supervisory, mentoring, project leadership, or quality assurance experience is considered an asset.
