Staff / Principal Embedded Systems Engineer
The Opportunity
We're partnering with a well-funded, high-growth technology company entering an exciting phase of expansion and investment in its engineering capabilities.
The business develops proprietary hardware and software solutions, combining embedded systems, advanced computing and intelligent automation to deliver innovative technology into commercial environments.
With an established product and ambitious plans for further growth, they're now looking to appoint an experienced Staff / Principal Embedded Systems Engineer to take technical ownership of a core hardware and software platform.
This is a senior, hands-on engineering position with genuine influence over technical strategy, system architecture and future product development.
You'll have the opportunity to challenge existing approaches, shape the next generation of technology and help establish the engineering foundations needed to support continued growth.
The business is particularly interested in engineers who enjoy solving complex problems, taking ownership and working across the full embedded software stack.
The Role
- Take technical ownership of a proprietary embedded platform, influencing its architecture, performance and long-term development.
- Lead platform-level Android development, including AOSP, frameworks, HALs and system services.
- Work extensively with embedded Linux, kernel development, device drivers and ARM-based hardware.
- Lead hardware integration, board bring-up and software development for future hardware generations.
- Develop and optimise real-time multimedia systems, including video processing, hardware codecs and audio/video pipelines.
- Investigate and resolve complex hardware and software compatibility issues.
- Improve device reliability, remote diagnostics, software updates and fleet management capabilities.
- Make key architectural decisions while remaining actively involved in hands-on development.
- Work closely with engineering leadership to establish technical standards and best practices.
- Mentor engineers and contribute to the continued development of the wider technical team.
What We're Looking For
- Strong experience in embedded software engineering, ideally with significant exposure to Android platform development.
- Hands-on experience with AOSP, Android frameworks, HALs and system-level development.
- Excellent C/C++ programming skills.
- Experience with Linux kernel development, device drivers, BSPs and ARM SoCs.
- A strong understanding of multimedia systems, hardware video codecs and real-time processing.
- Experience with hardware debugging, integration and low-level development tools.
- Knowledge of hardware communication protocols and device compatibility.
- Experience developing reliable embedded systems deployed in real-world environments.
- The ability to independently lead technical decisions and take ownership of complex engineering challenges.
Experience within consumer electronics, connected devices, automotive technology, industrial systems or other hardware-focused environments would be particularly interesting.
Additional experience with edge computing, embedded AI or hardware acceleration would be advantageous.
Why This Opportunity?
This is an opportunity to join a growing technology business at a point where senior engineering expertise will have a significant influence on its future.
You'll be taking ownership of an established platform while helping shape its next generation, with the freedom to influence architecture, introduce improvements and solve complex technical challenges.
The position offers a combination of hands-on engineering, strategic responsibility and the opportunity to become a key technical figure within the organisation.
For someone who enjoys building technology, solving difficult problems and seeing their decisions make a tangible impact, this offers considerably more ownership than a typical senior engineering position.
Package
- Competitive base salary, with flexibility depending on experience.
- Equity participation.
- Comprehensive benefits.
- Flexible working and hybrid arrangements.
