Stationary Engineer - Class 4B

Responsibilities:
Facility operations
- Operate plant equipment and systems during scheduled work shifts.
- Monitor instrumentation, gauges, and computerized operating data.
- Start, stop, and adjust equipment manually or through computerized controls.
- Respond to alarms, inspect operating conditions, and report equipment failures.
- Conduct inspection rounds and verify operating equipment.
- Ensure compliance with operating procedures and health, safety, and environmental standards.
Maintenance and troubleshooting
- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance, emergency repairs, and equipment overhauls.
- Use hand and power tools to complete maintenance activities.
- Identify, diagnose, and repair issues affecting the plant and distribution systems.
- Determine required replacement parts and provide recommendations regarding procurement.
- Provide technical guidance to trades personnel in resolving equipment issues.
- Accompany contractors and other personnel performing work within the facilities.
Technical testing and monitoring
- Perform operational testing of diesel-powered generators.
- Record test results and equipment status.
- Conduct standardized water sample testing.
- Adjust chemical feed rates based on test results.
Documentation and reporting
- Maintain shift logbooks and operational records.
- Record meter, gauge, and instrument readings.
- Perform calculations related to water, gas, and electricity consumption.
- Prepare reports concerning operational issues, deficiencies, and incidents.
- Communicate information related to operations, operational changes, and new equipment.
Health and safety
- Investigate situations that may affect the safety and security of facilities and personnel.
- Implement appropriate corrective measures when required.
- Participate in team-based safety watch activities.
- Perform housekeeping duties within the facilities.
What you will need to succeed:
Education and certifications
- Valid Class 4B Stationary Engineer Certificate.
- Hold a valid federal Government of Canada security clearance.
Experience
- +3 years of experience operating Class 4B heating and cooling plants.
Technical and professional skills
- Thorough knowledge of the operation of heating and cooling plant equipment and systems.
- Knowledge of boilers, chillers, generators, combustion chambers, heating equipment, water pumps, valves, expansion joints, fans, distribution systems, auxiliary equipment, and related computerized systems.
- Knowledge of testing methods applicable to mechanical equipment and water samples.
- Knowledge of administrative practices related to work orders, operational data compilation, and report preparation.
- General knowledge of federal and provincial environmental, health, and safety regulations.
- Ability to start and shut down large oil- and gas-fired boilers and generators.
- Ability to adjust flow control systems, perform preventive maintenance, and replace components when required.
- Proficiency in the use of various operational software applications.
- Ability to perform standardized tests to determine chemical concentrations in water.
- Manual dexterity required to repair and overhaul mechanical equipment and components.
- Ability to use a variety of hand and power tools.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills to support stakeholder interactions and the preparation of shift logs, reports, and operational documentation.
