Journeyperson Electrician
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Reporting to the Maintenance Supervisor, the Journeyman Electrician is responsible for the effective, functioning of the electrical systems, including installations, for the Calgary Plant.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Install, test, and repair wiring, conduits, motors, transformers, and high/low-voltage distribution units.
- Troubleshoot, modify, and service Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), variable frequency drives (VFDs), and sensors.
- Apply mechanical aptitude to service gearboxes, pneumatic/hydraulic actuators, valves, and heavy automated assembly hardware.
- Read and interpret complex electrical blueprints, control schematics, and PLC ladder logic to isolate and resolve system faults quickly.
- Conduct scheduled inspections, calibrate industrial instrumentation, and keep accurate maintenance logs.
- Follow strict lockout/tagout (LOTO) protocols and provincial occupational health & safety codes.
- Accountable for the effective functioning of the electrical systems in the plant and for the installation of new equipment.
- Ensure compliance with HACCP and GMP and maintain all relevant documentation.
- Follow all company policies, procedures and safe work practices.
- Accountable to ensure a safe work environment for coworkers, contractors, visitors and customers.
- Actively monitoring critical events (breakdowns) and making decision on when escalation and external support is required.

REPORTS: 0
INTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS: All plant Staff and Departments; HR, Quality Assurance, Research and
Development, and Continuous Improvement.
EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS: CFIA, outside contractors, and vendors.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must have a valid Alberta Electrical Journeyperson
- Certification or a recognized Interprovincial Red Seal equivalent.
- Strong PLC experience and programming capabilities.
- Experience in robotics is an asset.
- Strong analytical troubleshooting skills.
- Minimum 2 years' experience performing repairs in a manufacturing environment.
- Mechanical, electrical and refrigeration systems.
- Knowledge, and an ability to use power and manual tools.
- Food manufacturing experience is required.
- Experience using CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) or computerize maintenance planning tools required.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- The working environment varies greatly from one job to another. Safety Risk Assessments are used as a function tool to forecast and eliminate risk of incidents, as an integral part of routine and non-routine maintenance tasks.
- This position works within different departments, with different temperatures throughout a single shift. Work environments range from hot, humid conditions to freezing environments (ranging between 20 – 2 degrees Celsius).
- Water is a constant factor, in addition to ambient moisture from processing, facility undergoes a nightly sanitation process.
- Floors are frequently coated in water, animal by-products and organic residue creating slip hazards.
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and hearing protection is mandatory.
- Must be able to squat, kneel, lift, push, pull, climb stairs and ladders.
- May be required to lift and move items that weigh over 30 pounds.
- There is some risk of injury when working with electricity, gases under high pressure and hazardous gases. Critical Life Safety Policy and other procedures are strictly enforced.
