What you'll be doing
You'll be primarily responsible for co-creating major features in collaboration with other Software Engineers, Product Managers and Product Designers to support our customers.
As a Backend Software Engineer you are coding the business logic and exposing it through contracts/APIs, working with the database, working with both tooling and infrastructure. For all of your work you will be writing tests, improving the observability and understanding the impact of your work on the team and platform. You will do investigations and document them so others can learn from your investigations
After you have gained understanding of the platform you will have the opportunity to be the Tech Lead for new features. Tech Lead is a temp role based on specfic work.
You will help us improve the Observation, Performance, Health and the Quality of our Platform and will serve as a Sprint Protector and Incident Watch in two week rotations - There will be 11 engineers on Rotation - all of the software engineers take turns. It's rare but sometimes this will lead to work in the evening or the weekend. You will get that time back in Vacation.
You will help us improve our Architecture using Domain Driven Design, help the team keep improving the tooling we use and support and mentor other software engineers regardless of Seniority.
You will support our Cloud Infrastructure in Google Cloud (GCP)

About the Engineering department
We have a CTO (Eric Brooke) and eight engineers, growing to ten with this hire and a Backend Engineer hire. Both roles report to the CTO.
We work in two teams: Carbon (Platform focus) and Soil Troopers (Product focus), each supported by a Team Lead, Product Manager, and Product Designer. The team is mostly based in Ontario and works remotely, with some engineers using our office alongside Sales, Customer Success, and Product. We get together every quarter in Toronto.

About you
You are proactive, tenacious, curious and own the quality of your work
You have been working as a software developer or engineer for 3 to 8 years and you love to code
You enjoy working with engineers, product managers, product designers and customer success.
You're very proficient in Javascript and TypeScript, understand core principles of web development, communicate effectively, and have experience building scalable systems.
You believe in testing in all of its dimensions
You're a technical educator, not a technical dictator
Requirements:
Working with others - Good communication and collaboration skills
Coding Language- Proficient in Javascript, TypeScript, SQL
Frameworks - Nest.js, Node.js
Database - PostgreSQL, and the ORM sequelize
API - Experienced on REST API design, coding and testing
Quality - Documentation, API testing, Unit testing, Integration Testing, Observation
Backend Architecture - You can discuss different architectural approaches and articulate their trade-offs
Scaling - You have many examples to pull from, that helps you understand SASS platforms at scale and how we need Architect and code whilst scaling
AI-assisted development - You use tools like Claude or Copilot as part of your workflow and can speak to how they've helped you ship better work
Location - You live in Ontario, Canada.

Screening of resumes done by the CTO
Interview 1 - With the CTO (50 Mins)
Given Take Home and send in to SoilFLO team
The Take Home will be in TypeScript
We will score it on:
* Complete to spec
* Code was readable and used TypeScript well
* Was easy to setup and run by the reviewers
* Quality work
* Observation work
Interview 2 (Tech Interview) - 50 mins
* Engineers review your Take Home, and give you feedback on your submissions
* Then they will ask you to add a feature live with two engineers
Interview 3 with Product Manager and Product Designer (40 mins)
Interview 4 with the Founders of SoilFLO (45 Mins)
CTO will collect feedback and make a decision
