The Position
As a Residential Counsellor, your primary role is to provide support and guidance to clients who are seeking emergency shelter and outreach services for young women ages 18 – 29 who need safe, supportive temporary housing. The young women who reside at Naomi Centre receive support that encourages making informed choices and decisions, potentially leading to greater stability in regard to personal relationships, finances, emotional well-being and housing so they can return to their family or community. Counsellors at Naomi Centre work as part of a staff team to ensure quality services to young women.
What You’ll Do
- Orients new residents to Naomi Centre.
- Provides supportive counselling to participants.
- Works from a strengths-based perspective to empower and encourage residents to make decisions for themselves and teach life skills.
- Uses conflict resolution skills to reduce and help resolve communal living issues.
- Helps with filling out applications for various supports/services.
- Provides residents and former residents support and assistance with everyday living tasks and assisting with housing searches.
- Maintains proper documentation of resident files and shift logs.
- Completes intake assessments, admissions and departures.
- Accompanies participants to community appointments as requested.
- Provides access to and prepares healthy meals and snacks.
- Refers participants to resources in the community based on their individual needs.
- Advocates for participants when necessary.
- Attends and participates in bi-weekly staff meetings.
What You’ll Bring
- Post-secondary degree in the Human Services field or equivalent education and work experience, especially in the area of Mental Health and Addictions.
- Knowledge of harm reduction and Housing First approaches.
- Knowledge of working with marginalized and vulnerable individuals.
- Experience working within a residential setting.
- Strong interpersonal skills while being able to work independently.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to multi-task and to prioritize work.
- Attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work under deadlines with frequent interruptions.
- Criminal Record Check/Vulnerable Sector Check.
The Details
The hourly rate for this position starts at $31.37 with shift differentials for weekday evening and weekend hours. This is a relief/part-time position in a 24-hour emergency shelter and requires shift work, including days, evenings, nights and weekends.
