The Position
The Housing Support Worker (HSW) plays an important role in the operations of a 15-unit transitional and supportive living arrangement for women and gender-diverse individuals who have experienced the criminal justice system, homelessness, or gender-based violence.
This position provides trauma-informed and harm-reduction support to residents to maintain their housing and assist with transitions. The HSW works closely with residents and the Program Lead to support individual needs and contribute to the overall day-to-day flow and function of the building.
What You’ll Do
- Works collaboratively with residents to support tenancy, prevent eviction and assist with transitions.
- Supports resident intake, orientation, and moving processes.
- Builds trusting, respectful relationships with residents using trauma-informed and harm-reduction approaches.
- Intervenes during times of crisis and supports residents’ wellness plans.
- Facilitates conflict resolution and supports residents with accountability.
- Assists residents in preparing for transition to longer-term housing options.
- Maintains strong communication with staff, regularly sharing relevant information across roles to support continuity of care and operations.
- Responds to day-to-day issues as they arise, including resident concerns, conflicts, or building needs, and escalates concerns to the Program Lead as needed.
- Completes required documentation, data collection, and housing-related records in a timely and accurate manner.
- Engages with residents and the team to problem solve and make decisions collaboratively.
- Maintains awareness of the overall “pulse” of the building and communicates emerging issues to the Program Lead and staff team when needed.
- Supports the overall function of the building by ensuring the cleanliness of shared spaces (e.g., dishes, garbage, general upkeep).
- Reports maintenance needs and promotes shared responsibility for common areas.
- Supports consistent practice aligned with program and organizational values, policies, and procedures.
- Actively participates in staff meetings and development opportunities.
- Supports a safe, welcoming, respectful, and community-oriented environment.
What You’ll Bring
- Completion of post-secondary education, preferably in human services.
- Experience working with women and gender-diverse individuals who have experienced the criminal justice system, homelessness, and/or violence, considered an asset.
- Direct community work or volunteer experience in a residential setting considered an asset.
- Knowledge of homelessness, mental health, substance use challenges, gender diversity, trauma-informed and harm-reduction approaches.
- Experience with conflict resolution and crisis intervention.
- Demonstrated professionalism, sound boundaries, and adherence to confidentiality.
- Strong time management, organization, and written/verbal communication skills.
- Awareness of relevant community resources and a commitment to ongoing learning.
- Standard First Aid and ASIST certification required.
- Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening required.
- Reliability Status with Public Services and Procurement Canada required.
The Details
We are looking to hire relief, on call positions. The hourly rate is $22.03 - $24.16.
