Brief Description
The
Business Unit Controller (BUC) is involved in all aspects of financial management, including accounting and short/long-term planning for the rental business unit. Partnering with leadership and other stakeholders, the BUC will help guide understanding and decision making for the Company. Through collaboration with Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A), Commissions & Payroll and Operational Leadership, the BUC will assist with preparation of materials for various audiences including Senior Leadership, C-suite executives, the Board of Directors, and Investors. The BUC will be responsible for maintaining/implementing financial controls. They will ensure compliance with accepted accounting guidelines, processes and legal requirements, and organize the preparation of corporate tax and audit engagements.
Roles And Responsibilities
- Review and analyze consolidated financial statements for an international group of companies
- Oversee the timely preparation of working papers and journal entries for the month-end close and support team members in developing and automating processes to improve accuracy and enhance analysis for each accounting period
- Provide comprehensive financial information to FP&A, identifying and reporting on variances between budgeted and actual results along with unusual business outcomes
- Work with operations on project accounting, project performance, and reporting
- Actively participate in the preparation of monthly forecasts and annual budgets by maintaining data used by leadership and developing relevant assumptions
- Assist senior leaders in understanding the drivers of the business and provide appropriate recommendations during monthly preliminary reviews by showcasing trends in AR, invoicing timeliness, profitability changes, asset purchasing, cross-rental expenditures and other KPI’s
- Update senior leaders on the status of capital projects and evaluate progress as required
- Responsible for ensuring compliance with all applicable laws, rules, and regulations such as WCB reporting, IRS/CRA communication, sales taxes, and other government reporting
- Work closely with external auditors on providing supporting documentation, working papers and clarifying controls, processes and accounting entries
- Management and reporting of operational/cost accounting including the creation and monitoring of fully burdened labor rates and other operational accounting activities
Leadership & Team Management
- Lead, mentor, and develop accounting team members to build a high-performing and accountable team
- Establish priorities and assign responsibilities to ensure timely completion of accounting activities
- Provide regular feedback, coaching, and performance guidance to direct reports
- Identify training and professional development opportunities for team members
- Promote a culture of accountability, collaboration, continuous improvement, and customer service within the Accounting department
- Ensure appropriate cross-training and documentation of key accounting processes
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required
- CPA preferred
- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, with increasing levels of responsibility.
- Prior experience in an Assistant Controller, Accounting Manager, Controller, or similar leadership role preferred.
- Experience managing and developing accounting professionals
- Experience managing month-end and year-end close processes
- Experience with multi-entity and/or multi-location accounting strongly preferred
- Experience with financial statement preparation and analysis
- Strong understanding of internal controls and accounting processes
- Experience working with external auditors and supporting financial statement audits
- M&A, acquisition integration, or purchase accounting experience is a plus
- Strong Microsoft Excel skills and experience working with ERP/accounting systems
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to identify and resolve accounting issues
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to lead a team while also remaining hands-on with accounting activities
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, projects, and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to work onsite in an office environment Monday through Friday
Preferred Experience
- Experience in a multi-entity, multi-jurisdiction organization
- Experience in rental, industrial services, energy, electrical services, engineering, or a related industry
- Experience working for a private equity-backed or acquisitive organization
- Experience implementing or improving ERP systems, accounting processes, and internal controls
- Experience with SAP
- Public accounting experience is a plus
