Purpose of the Role:
As a Material Characterization Co-op, you will support Svante’s Structured Sorbent Industrialization team in the characterization and evaluation of materials relevant to carbon capture technologies and manufacturing processes. You will follow established study plans, operate standard and custom laboratory instruments, and perform scientific data analysis and interpretation to help evaluate material properties and performance. The role will also provide opportunities to contribute to method development, experimental optimization, uncertainty analysis, and broader research and development activities while supporting the preparation of technical documentation and maintaining a safe and organized laboratory environment.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- Currently pursuing a degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Chemical Physics, or a related discipline, with an interest in materials characterization and carbon capture technologies.
- Strong interest in porous materials, polymers, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), sorbents, and materials science, with an interest in laboratory-scale chemical synthesis, wet chemistry, and sample preparation.
- Interest or hands-on experience with characterization and sorption techniques such as TGA, DSC, DVS, XRD, EDS, PSD, FTIR, gas sorption, breakthrough testing, and mass spectrometry.
- Strong analytical and organizational skills with the ability to perform scientific data analysis, interpret experimental results, and contribute to method development and experimental uncertainty analysis.
- Strong attention to detail, commitment to laboratory safety, and ability to follow established procedures and guidelines while working effectively both independently and collaboratively.
What Success Looks Like in This Role:
- Successfully conduct material characterization activities by following study plans and using standard and custom laboratory instruments to generate accurate and reliable data.
- Analyze and interpret experimental data to support the evaluation of material properties, sorbent performance, and carbon capture applications.
- Contribute to the development, optimization, and validation of characterization methods while supporting experimental uncertainty analysis.
- Prepare accurate technical documentation, including reports, SOPs, presentations, publications, and IP-related materials, as required.
- Maintain a safe, organized, and efficient laboratory environment by supporting routine lab operations, instrument health checks, maintenance activities, and other R&D initiatives within the Structured Sorbent Industrialization team.
