Location - This role is in-person. Work primarily takes place at North Campus, Edmonton.
The Department of Women's and Gender Studies invites applications for a full time Career-status Teaching Professor, with a cross-appointment in Political Science, at the rank of Assistant or Associate. The position has an anticipated starting date of July 1, 2027.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will have a specialization in gender and politics, broadly construed, and will teach a complement of mostly in-person classes for Women’s and Gender Studies and Political Science. These courses will range from larger 100-200 level courses to smaller seminars and graduate courses. The candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to the strengths of each department by developing courses in their area of expertise.
The standard teaching load for Career-status Teaching Professors is eight courses per year and includes Spring or Summer teaching. The typical spread of courses will be five courses in Women’s and Gender Studies and three in Political Science.
The candidate will be involved in teaching-related service.
Possibilities exist to teach combined courses in both departments or develop new courses.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will have:
- A PhD in Women’s and Gender Studies, Political Science, or a closely related discipline. ABD applicants with a strong expectation of completing the PhD before July 1, 2027, may also be considered.
- Teaching interests in gender and politics, broadly construed, and demonstrable capability to teach current 100- and 200-level courses in the WGS and POL S catalog.
- Familiarity with interdisciplinary learning contexts, diverse student communities, and inclusive classrooms.
It is an asset to have:
- The ability to teach courses in some of the following areas: feminist theory, feminist research methods, gender and social justice, and international approaches to peace and conflict for Women’s and Gender Studies and the Gender and Social Justice Masters.
- The ability to teach courses in some of the following areas: gender and politics, public policy studies, and international relations for Political Science.
- Additional teaching competencies such as: experience with Canvas/other LMS, ability to create high-impact material for online courses, familiarity with innovative responses to AI, experiential and/or community service-learning, and other experience related to teaching such as advising, supervising undergraduate research, and/or mentoring.
There is no research component associated with this position, although the successful candidate is expected to remain current with the relevant literature in their fields as it applies to their teaching assignments.
