Toronto Veterinary Emergency Hospital (TVEH) welcomes passionate
Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVTs) eager to develop advanced critical care skills and work alongside a highly skilled, team-oriented group within our
ICU department. At TVEH, we champion our RVTs to practice at the top of their credentials. You will use your full range of clinical skills every day in a supportive, high-standards environment.
What You Will Do
As a vital part of our ICU team, you’ll partner closely with our veterinary specialists and technicians to provide high-level, compassionate care to critically ill and high-dependency patients. In this role, you will:
- Advanced Clinical Care & Technical Procedures: Place and manage IV catheters, urinary catheters, nasogastric tubes, and nasal oxygen cannulas. Maintain specialized devices, including E-tubes, chest tubes, closed-suction drains, and wound diffusion catheters.
- Therapeutics & Pain Management: Set up, monitor, and adjust IV fluid therapy, constant rate infusions (CRIs), and multimodal pain management plans while safely administering a wide range of emergency medications and treatments.
- Critical Patient Monitoring & Assessment: Perform close, continuous patient assessments to recognize subtle clinical changes across complex cases (such as GDVs, blocked cats, sepsis, severe trauma, parvo, and respiratory distress) and take prompt, proactive action.
- Emergency & Surgical Support: Support anesthesia and urgent interventions for emergency procedures, providing attentive perioperative and post-operative critical care monitoring.
- Team Collaboration & Communication: Work collaboratively with our emergency clinicians, specialty teams, and fellow technicians to ensure seamless communication, timely medical interventions, and outstanding patient outcomes.
- Schedule: Our ICU technicians follow a rotating schedule of four days on and five days off, consisting of two 10-hour day shifts followed by two 12-hour night shifts. This rotation includes weekends and holidays.
What You Bring
- Graduation from an accredited Veterinary Technician (RVT) or Animal Health Technician (AHT) program, with current registration (or eligibility for registration) in good standing with your provincial veterinary association.
- Prior experience in an emergency, ICU, or specialty referral hospital is a strong asset, but those enthusiastic candidates looking to grow into specialty care are also welcome!
- Strong clinical judgment, keen attention to detail, and the ability to stay organized, prioritize tasks, and remain composed in a fast-paced ICU environment.
- Compassionate Approach to delivering patient-centred care and supporting pet parents with empathy and understanding during stressful medical situations.
- Collaborative team-first mindset, with strong interpersonal and communication skills and a dedication to building supportive, respectful relationships across all hospital departments.
- Growth & curiosity: commitment to lifelong learning, evidence-based medicine, and taking advantage of ongoing professional development and CE opportunities.
