COMPANY OVERVIEW
Volatus Aerospace is a Canadian aerospace and defence technology company developing next-generation uncrewed and autonomous aerial systems, subsystems, and mission payloads. Our R&D portfolio spans platform development, certification, avionics, autonomy, and advanced sensing technologies for defence and commercial applications.
POSITION OVERVIEW
We are seeking a Solution Architect to be a dedicated technical partner to our Strategic Funding, Partnerships, and Business Development teams, providing timely, accurate technical support for partner engagements, funding submissions, and government challenge proposals. This role exists to make sure external stakeholders always have a knowledgeable, responsive technical point of contact, so that partnership and funding activities can move quickly without waiting on product engineers who are focused on program delivery. This is a technical hybrid role: strong engineering fluency across multiple domains, but not a hands-on design or development position. Reports directly to the Chief Technology Officer.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Solution Architect act as a dedicated technical resource for Strategic Funding, Partnerships, and Business Development, ensuring their external engagements always have knowledgeable technical support available
- Represent Volatus technically in discussions with partners, primes, and funding organizations, providing accurate specifications, program status, and technical context on the company's behalf
- Interface directly with end users, including military, law enforcement, and allied defence organizations (e.g., Canadian Armed Forces, RCMP, NATO), as well as commercial end users, to understand operational requirements and communicate platform and system capabilities
- Prepare technical content for whitepapers, funding submissions, and partner-facing documentation, working closely with Business Development and Strategic Partnerships to meet submission deadlines
- Respond promptly to incoming technical questions from external stakeholders and internal partnership teams, resolving what can be addressed directly and coordinating quickly on anything that needs deeper subject-matter input
- Bring in the right subject-matter engineer for specific technical questions that genuinely require it, coordinating with the relevant Program/Project Manager so this happens in a planned, low-friction way rather than as an unplanned interruption to program teams
- Maintain a working technical understanding across multiple concurrent programs (platforms, subsystems, and sensing systems) so partners and funding bodies get fast, credible answers without needing a new briefing each time
- Flag to the relevant engineering lead any request involving proprietary design information, IP disclosure, certification commitments, or contractual/legal exposure, to ensure these are handled with appropriate care
- Help Strategic Funding and Partnerships move faster by being consistently available and responsive, reducing delays partners and funding bodies experience waiting on technical answers
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as may be reasonably assigned by the Company from time to time.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATION
- Bachelor's degree in Aerospace, Systems, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering (Master's preferred)
- 7+ years of engineering experience, ideally spanning multiple technical domains (e.g., structures, avionics, systems integration)
- Demonstrated ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to non-technical or partially technical external audiences
- Experience representing engineering in external-facing settings (partner meetings, funding applications, customer discussions)
- Strong judgment in distinguishing what can be shared or committed to versus what requires escalation
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Must be a Canadian citizen and eligible for security clearance
PREDERRED QUALIFICATION
- Experience in a Solution Architect, Systems Engineer, or technical program liaison role bridging engineering and business/partnership functions
- Familiarity with defence and government funding program requirements (e.g., IRAP, ISC challenges, or similar)
- Experience working across multiple concurrent programs or platforms
- Familiarity with confidentiality and information-control requirements in partner and government engagements
- Experience engaging directly with military, law enforcement, or allied defence end users (e.g., CAF, RCMP, NATO) or commercial end users in an operational requirements or capability-demonstration context
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as may be reasonably assigned by the Company from time to time.
ELIIBILITY
Due to a mandatory requirement of the applicable government contract, candidates must be Canadian citizens and eligible to obtain and maintain the required Government of Canada security clearance.
HOURS OF WORK AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
- The position is an onsite role, and the Employee is required to perform their duties primarily at the Company’s designated workplace, as directed by the Company.
- The standard work schedule consists of forty (40) hours per week, typically performed Monday to Friday, subject to operational requirements.
- From time to time, the Employee may be required to maintain reasonable flexibility in working hours to support operational needs, time-sensitive activities, or business priorities.
