VSG Recruitment is partnering with a high-growth technology company to hire a Member of Technical Staff (MTS) in Toronto. This is a senior, Staff-level engineering opportunity for someone who wants to own and build the core platform powering a rapidly growing portfolio of software businesses.
You’ll take end-to-end ownership of critical parts of the technology stack, from architecture and implementation through production operations and long-term technical direction. The environment is highly technical, fast-moving, and suited to engineers who enjoy solving complex systems and infrastructure problems at scale.
What You’ll Do
You’ll own a major area of the platform, which could include:
Data Platform: Build and scale multi-tenant data infrastructure, ingestion pipelines, canonical data models, and semantic layers using technologies such as Iceberg, Snowflake, Databricks, and cloud object storage.
Core Services & APIs: Design reliable backend services covering identity, access control, auditing, workflow orchestration, and internal APIs used by other engineering teams.
Multi-Tenant Infrastructure: Develop secure isolation across data, compute, and credentials while supporting cross-cloud connectivity and regional data requirements.
Workflow & Execution Systems: Build reliable execution infrastructure supporting retries, idempotency, rollback, human approval workflows, audit trails, and both scripted and model-driven processes.
Observability & Evaluation: Develop tracing, metrics, structured logging, replay infrastructure, regression testing, and experimentation capabilities.
Platform Safety: Design safeguards including autonomy controls, kill switches, auditability, and mechanisms that limit the impact of failures.
Technical Direction: Make architectural decisions that will influence how the platform scales as the organization and product portfolio grow.
What We’re Looking For
Staff, Principal, or equivalent senior engineering experience, with a track record of building and operating production systems that businesses depend on.
Strong programming ability in at least one of Python, Go, Rust, or TypeScript, with the ability to work across languages when required.
Deep understanding of distributed systems, including idempotency, partial failures, retries, eventual consistency, schema evolution, and fault tolerance.
Experience building or operating modern data infrastructure using technologies such as Kafka, Spark, dbt, Iceberg, Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery, or similar.
Strong understanding of multi-tenant architecture, service design, APIs, security, and production reliability.
A platform engineering mindset - you care about developer experience and build APIs and systems that other engineers can use safely and effectively.
Comfortable making significant architectural decisions in an environment where requirements and product direction continue to evolve.
Strong ownership mentality with the ability to take projects from initial design through production and ongoing operation.
Interest in modern AI/ML systems and the infrastructure required to deploy and operate them reliably.
Nice to Have
Previous Staff or Principal Engineer experience within a high-performing engineering organization.
Hands-on experience with Iceberg, Polaris, Snowflake, or Databricks at scale.
Background building multi-tenant SaaS platforms or infrastructure.
Production experience with LLM or agentic systems, including evaluations and observability.
Experience with offline reinforcement learning, contextual bandits, or sequential decision-making.
Open-source contributions within data infrastructure, observability, platform engineering, or developer tooling.
Why This Opportunity?
This is an opportunity to work on challenging platform and systems engineering problems with significant scale ahead. The platform is expected to support 100+ software businesses, creating complex challenges across data architecture, multi-tenancy, distributed systems, reliability, security, and AI-enabled workflows.
You’ll have substantial technical ownership and the ability to influence architecture from an early stage rather than simply maintaining an established system.
If you’re a senior engineer who enjoys building foundational systems, solving difficult infrastructure problems, and taking genuine end-to-end ownership, VSG Recruitment would like to hear from you.
