Job Title: Mechanical Project Engineer
Job Description
The Mechanical Project Engineer designs and delivers mechanical and process solutions for industrial and municipal water and wastewater treatment systems, as well as biological sludge incineration and digestion. This role focuses on equipment sizing, system design, and technical documentation to ensure projects meet quality standards, schedule, budget, and customer expectations. The engineer develops key technical documents and RFQ packages, performs bid evaluations, and collaborates with a cross-functional engineering and project team to successfully execute large-scale water management projects.
Responsibilities
- Perform mechanical and process design of water and wastewater treatment systems, ensuring design quality while meeting project schedule, budget, and customer expectations.
- Execute required calculations to specify equipment, including general hydraulics, chemical feed systems, vessels and tanks, pumps, filters, blowers, compressed air systems, piping systems, valves, and instrumentation.
- Perform mechanical-related design for treatment systems, including equipment sizing, generating technical specifications, and conducting technical bid evaluations for mechanical equipment such as pumps, blowers, compressors, chemical feed systems, vessels and tanks, filters, piping systems, and valves.
- Engineer systems in compliance with sound engineering principles, customer standards and specifications, contractual requirements, and all applicable local codes.
- Ensure all engineering designs, bills of material, and technical data are completely and accurately documented by reviewing engineering drawings and related documents.
- Develop key documents and technical RFQ packages for rotating equipment, vessels, valves, and other mechanical equipment, and perform technical bid evaluations.
- Coordinate activities related to process and mechanical design reviews, and support resolution of project issues, including scheduling and technical challenges during design, construction, and start-up.
- Meet Quality Management System (QMS) requirements for project execution and documentation, maintaining high standards of quality and traceability.
- Interface regularly with the project manager and customers to address project progress, technical issues, and problem resolution.
- Organize project documentation, maintain accurate records, and manage vendor communication and coordination.
- Read and interpret P&IDs and PFDs, including material balances, to support system design and equipment specification.
- Perform hydraulic design, including head and NPSH calculations, for sizing pumps and other rotating equipment.
- Contribute effectively to team and department projects through clear communication and collaboration with other engineers and drafting resources.
- Establish and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers and cross-functional project team members.
- Support large, million-dollar water management projects by providing timely engineering deliverables to avoid project delays and protect organizational reputation.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or Chemical Engineering.
- 5+ years of design experience as a Project Engineer in water treatment or wastewater treatment projects, working on the front end of projects.
- Demonstrated engineering experience rather than drafting or design-only experience, with responsibility for project-level mechanical scope.
- Strong ability to read and interpret P&IDs and PFDs, including material balances.
- Ability to perform hydraulic design and calculations for sizing pumps, compressors, valves, and tanks.
- Experience with the specification and evaluation of rotating equipment, piping, tanks, and manual valves.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and attention to detail, with a basic understanding of water chemistry.
- Proficiency in equipment sizing and mechanical calculations for treatment systems.
- Ability to engineer systems in accordance with engineering principles, customer standards, contractual requirements, and applicable codes.
- Strong documentation skills, including the ability to ensure complete and accurate engineering drawings, bills of material, and technical data.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills for interaction with project managers, customers, vendors, and internal teams.
- Ability to work comfortably in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate and maintain professional relationships with co-workers and cross-functional teams.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience in water treatment and wastewater treatment applications.
- Background in process industries such as food and beverage, chemicals, oil and gas, petrochemical, or hazardous process environments.
- Experience with EPC or EPCM project environments.
- Familiarity with ASME standards and piping design practices.
- Knowledge of documentation requirements and quality management systems in engineering environments.
- Experience with rotating equipment including pumps, compressors, and blowers.
- Experience with valves, piping systems, vessels, and filters in industrial applications.
- Ability to read and work with P&IDs and PFDs, including material balances, for process design.
- Exposure to mechanical design tools such as SolidWorks or similar CAD platforms.
- Comfort working on large, complex, million-dollar projects with demanding timelines.
- Strong technical writing skills for specifications, RFQs, and bid evaluations.
- Ability to manage vendor communication and support procurement activities.
- Candidates are expected to be incorporated for engagement.
Work Environment
The role is primarily office-based, with approximately 90% of time spent in the office and up to 5% travel throughout North America as needed for project requirements. Core working hours are typically between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., with occasional additional hours when timelines are tight. The facility is modern, well-lit, and includes amenities such as a cafeteria and a fitness centre, contributing to a comfortable and attractive work setting. The culture emphasizes strong collaboration, professional growth, and a supportive environment, although the pace can be demanding when project deadlines are approaching, which may create periods of stress. Business casual attire is expected, including a collared shirt or golf polo and dress pants. The Mechanical Project Engineer works closely with other Project Engineers, Mechanical Engineers, and a drafting team based in India, leveraging cross-functional collaboration to deliver high-quality projects. Pay And Benefits
The pay range for this position is $60.00 - $70.00/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
