Role description:
Arcadis is seeking a Geotechnical Engineer-in-Training (EIT) to join the Engineering Services During Construction (ESDC) team supporting the Fraser River Tunnel Project in Vancouver, British Columbia. Working under the direction and supervision of licensed professional engineers, the successful candidate will provide field-based geotechnical and construction engineering support, document site conditions and construction progress, assist with technical reviews, and coordinate with multidisciplinary design and construction teams.
This position is intended for an early-career engineering professional seeking progressive experience toward professional engineering registration while contributing to the delivery of a major infrastructure project.
Role accountabilities:
- Provide geotechnical field engineering support during construction and preparatory works under the supervision of licensed professional engineers.
- Observe construction activities and document field conditions, progress, equipment, materials, and issues relevant to the geotechnical scope.
- Prepare clear and accurate daily field observation reports, site records, photographs, markups, progress summaries, and supporting documentation.
- Support geotechnical investigations, including drilling and rock coring supervision, borehole and core logging, soil and rock sampling, groundwater observations, monitoring well activities, and field testing.
- Assist with geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring activities and maintain organized monitoring and field records.
- Support the review of contractor submissions, work method statements, shop drawings, requests for information, technical queries, and field change documentation within the limits of the EIT role.
- Compare observed construction activities against approved drawings, specifications, method statements, and design requirements, and promptly escalate potential deviations or concerns to the responsible professional engineer.
- Coordinate with the ESDC team, design disciplines, construction personnel, contractors, client representatives, and specialist consultants while following established communication protocols.
- Participate in site meetings, safety briefings, coordination meetings, and technical discussions as required.
- Support preparation of technical memoranda, calculations, data summaries, drawings, schedules, and closeout records.
- Maintain project records in applicable document and project management systems.
- Comply with project health, safety, environmental, quality, and site-access requirements.
- Support day, night, or weekend site coverage when required by the construction program
Qualifications & Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Geological Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.
- Registered as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT), or eligible for EIT registration, with Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia.
- Approximately three years of relevant geotechnical, geological, environmental, construction, or infrastructure experience.
- Practical experience in field investigations, drilling supervision, borehole or core logging, soil and rock sampling, groundwater monitoring, or construction observation.
- Ability to prepare accurate, concise, and well-organized field and technical documentation.
- Strong communication, coordination, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary office and field environments.
- Valid driver's licence and willingness to travel to and work at active construction sites.
- Experience supporting transportation, tunnelling, marine, bridge, rail, or other major civil infrastructure projects.
- Experience with groundwater sampling, monitoring well installation, geotechnical instrumentation, compaction testing, or environmental/geotechnical sampling.
- Experience preparing daily field reports and maintaining construction progress records.
- Familiarity with Aconex, Autodesk Construction Cloud, ProjectWise, SharePoint, or comparable project delivery systems.
- Knowledge of Canadian construction practices, geotechnical standards, and engineering documentation requirements.

The salary range for this position is$71,280 - $106,000. The base salary represents Arcadis’ hiring range for this position. Actual salaries will vary and will be based on various factors, such as location, skills, experience, and qualification for the role.
