Position Summary & Development
Our client is seeking an Estimator to join and grow within our Estimating Department. This position is intended for an individual with a strong foundation in construction, engineering, architecture, or estimating who is looking to further develop their technical knowledge and build a long-term career in construction estimating.
Working alongside our Estimating, Project Management, Operations, and Management teams, the successful candidate will support the estimating and tendering process while gaining hands-on experience in quantity take-offs, tender preparation, cost estimating, change order pricing, drawing and specification review, job costing, supplier coordination, and project handover.
Key Responsibilities Estimating & Tender Support
- Assist with the review of new tender opportunities, project requirements, schedules, drawings, specifications, and scopes of work.
- Support the preparation of masonry estimates for ICI, residential high-rise, and low-rise residential projects.
- Prepare detailed quantity take-offs. Training on Medi Group's estimating systems, software, and procedures will be provided.
- Assist in developing project pricing for labour, materials, equipment, access, logistics, mobilization, and other project-specific requirements.
- Support the preparation of quotations, tender submissions, scope letters, clarifications, qualifications, and exclusions.
- Obtain and organize supplier and subcontractor pricing and assist with reviewing quotations for completeness.
- Develop an understanding of labour productivity, material costs, construction methods, and other factors that influence masonry estimating.
- Participate in estimate reviews and tender closings with senior members of the Estimating and Management teams.
- Assist with post-tender follow-up and clarification requests from clients and general contractors.
Project & Document Review
- Assist with reviewing Addenda, ASIs, SIs, RFIs, bulletins, revised drawings, and specifications to identify changes that may affect masonry scope, quantities, materials, or cost.
- Compare tender documents against contract and Issued for Construction drawings to assist in identifying scope changes.
- Identify discrepancies, omissions, or ambiguities within drawings and specifications and coordinate internally to obtain clarification where required.
- Develop an understanding of project specifications, masonry assemblies, construction details, sequencing, and contract requirements.
- Maintain accurate and organized estimating files, drawings, specifications, revisions, quotations, and supporting documentation.
Change Orders & Job Costing
- Assist with preparing change order estimates and quotations for active construction projects.
- Review revised drawings and instructions to help determine labour, material, equipment, and cost impacts.
- Support Project Management with pricing documentation and backup required for change order submissions.
- Assist with job costing and project cost analysis, comparing estimated quantities, labour, production rates, and material costs against actual project performance.
- In collaboration with Accounting and Operations, review completed project information to identify estimating trends, production efficiencies, cost variances, and opportunities to improve future estimates.
- Assist with maintaining historical project and costing information to support future tendering and budgeting.
- Develop an understanding of how field productivity, actual project costs, and historical performance can be used to improve future estimates.
Suppliers & Materials
- Assist with obtaining current material pricing, availability, lead times, and technical information from suppliers and supply-chain partners.
- Develop and maintain working relationships with key suppliers and vendors.
- Assist with reviewing specified materials for availability and suitability.
- Where products are discontinued, unavailable, outdated, or impractical, work with the Estimating team and suppliers to identify potential alternatives or substitutions for review.
- Support value-engineering initiatives by helping identify alternative materials or construction approaches that may provide cost or schedule benefits.
Tender Management & Administration
- Support the organization and maintenance of tender and bidding list, including opportunities, bid dates, addenda, submission requirements, and project status.
- Assist with coordinating tender deadlines, site meetings ,pre-bid meetings, and other estimating requirements.
- Maintain estimating databases, supplier information, material pricing, labour rates, production rates, and historical project information.
- Attend site visits and pre-bid meetings as required to develop an understanding of site conditions, logistics, access, staging, and project requirements.
- Assist with the transition of awarded projects from Estimating to Project Management and Operations.
- As experience develops, progressively assume responsibility for coordinating and managing assigned tender opportunities through the complete estimating process.
Qualifications
- Completed post-secondary education in Civil Engineering, Architectural Technology, Construction Management, Building Science, Construction Engineering, Estimating, or a related construction discipline.
- Previous exposure to the construction industry through employment, co-op, internships, estimating, project coordination, or related experience is preferred.
- Knowledge of ICI, residential high-rise, and/or low-rise residential construction practices is considered a strong asset.
- Ability to read and interpret architectural and structural drawings, specifications, schedules, and construction details.
- General understanding of construction methods, building assemblies, sequencing, and terminology.
- Masonry construction knowledge or previous masonry experience is considered an asset.
Software & Technical Skills
Experience with construction estimating and document-management software is considered a strong asset, including:
- On-Screen Takeoff (OST)
- PlanSwift
- Bluebeam Revu
- Microsoft Office (Excel, Word)
- Microsoft Outlook, Teams.
- AutoCAD – considered an asset but not required
