The Role:
We are seeking an experienced General Superintendent to oversee field operations across multiple projects within our Foundations division.
This role provides leadership to Site Superintendents, Forepersons, and field crews, ensuring projects are executed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project schedules, budgets, and quality requirements. Working closely with Project Managers and divisional leadership, the General Superintendent will coordinate manpower and equipment, resolve field challenges, and maintain consistent execution standards across active sites.
The ideal candidate brings strong technical knowledge of shoring and deep foundation construction, practical field leadership experience, and the ability to manage competing priorities across multiple projects.
Key Responsibilities:
Field Operations & Project Delivery
- Oversee day-to-day field operations across multiple shoring and foundation projects, from mobilization through completion.
- Direct and support Site Superintendents and Forepersons in planning activities, coordinating crews, and meeting project milestones.
- Review construction drawings, specifications, geotechnical reports, and engineered installation requirements to support effective execution.
- Coordinate shoring and foundation activities with excavation, dewatering, concrete, and other interfacing trades.
- Conduct regular site visits to review progress, workmanship, productivity, and site conditions, addressing issues before they affect delivery.
Planning & Resource Management
- Work with Project Managers and field leadership to develop construction sequences, look-ahead schedules, and recovery plans.
- Allocate labour, equipment, and materials across projects to meet operational demands and minimize downtime.
- Coordinate the mobilization, utilization, maintenance, and movement of drilling rigs, cranes, and supporting equipment.
- Anticipate site access constraints, subsurface challenges, material requirements, and potential scheduling conflicts.
Productivity & Cost Control
- Monitor field productivity, labour hours, equipment utilization, and material usage against project targets.
- Identify opportunities to improve construction methods, sequencing, and resource efficiency.
- Support Project Managers in identifying and documenting changed conditions, additional work, delays, and their operational impacts.
- Provide constructability and production input during estimating, tender reviews, and project handovers.
Leadership & Communication
- Mentor Superintendents and Forepersons, establish clear expectations, and address performance concerns.
- Maintain effective communication between field teams, Project Managers, divisional leadership, clients, subcontractors, and consultants.
- Participate in coordination meetings and provide clear updates on progress, resource needs, risks, and corrective actions.
- Support workforce planning, field recruitment, and the development of future site leaders.
Qualifications:
- 3 - 5 years of progressive construction field experience, including substantial experience in shoring and deep foundations.
- Demonstrated experience as a General Superintendent, Senior Superintendent, or Superintendent overseeing multiple projects or complex operations.
- Strong working knowledge of shoring and foundation systems, such as soldier piles and lagging, tiebacks, bracing, caissons/drilled shafts, and driven piles.
- Ability to interpret structural drawings, geotechnical information, specifications, and engineered construction sequences.
- Strong understanding of construction productivity, scheduling, cost control, and quality requirements.
- Sound judgment when addressing difficult site conditions and competing operational priorities.
- Clear communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel regularly between project sites.
- Post-secondary education in civil engineering, construction management, or a related discipline is an asset; equivalent practical field experience will be considered.
