Overview
The Mental Health & Addictions Support Worker helps coordinate and deliver safe, person-centred, trauma-informed care to clients and provides support and education throughout their treatment experience. The Mental Health & Addictions Support Worker supports the daily operation of the treatment program and contributes to a safe, respectful, structured, and recovery-oriented environment for clients and staff.
As a vital member of our interdisciplinary team, the Mental Health and Addictions Support Worker (MHASW) provides day-to-day client support, reinforces treatment expectations and recovery goals, facilitates approved programming and activities, and supports the overall functioning of the residential treatment environment. The MHASW works collaboratively with nursing, addictions counsellors, operations, and other members of the interdisciplinary team to support continuity of care.
The MHASW reports to the Operations Manager.
This role is a non-regulated role and therefore does not provide psychotherapy, clinical assessment, diagnosis, or other regulated health-care services. The MHASW provides practical and emotional support, encouragement, coaching, and facilitates approved psychoeducational sessions and recovery-oriented activities within the scope of the role.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Welcome and support new clients during admission and orientation in collaboration with the Admissions Coordinator, nursing, clinical staff, and other members of the interdisciplinary team.
- Support clients with immediate practical needs and assist them in becoming familiar with program expectations, routines, and the treatment environment.
- Engage clients using trauma-informed approaches and build positive, professional, and supportive relationships.
- Complete assigned wellness check-ins and client observations in accordance with organizational procedures.
- Provide emotional support, de-escalation, crisis support, and nonjudgmental listening to clients in distress.
- Recognize and promptly communicate changes in client presentation, behaviour, safety, or wellbeing to the appropriate nursing, clinical, or operational team member.
- Respond to client emergencies in accordance with established organizational emergency procedures and within the scope of the MHASW role.
- Write timely, objective, accurate, and factual client documentation and process notes as required.
- Coordinate with nursing staff, addictions counsellors, operations staff, and other interdisciplinary team members to support effective program operations and continuity of client care.
- Participate in daily shift summaries, handover communication, interdisciplinary meetings, and team debriefs as required.
- Support clients in maintaining healthy routines and participating appropriately in treatment programming.
- Promote respectful and safe interactions within the treatment environment and intervene or seek assistance when needed.
- Support the cleanliness, organization, and safety of client and common areas and assist with reasonable housekeeping or environmental duties as required.
- Conduct regular walk-throughs and check-ins on clients in accordance with established program procedures.
- Participate in the discharge process by assisting clients with practical discharge planning and transition activities as directed by the interdisciplinary team.
- Provide client transportation for approved appointments, activities, admissions, discharges, or transitions when required and authorized by the organization.
- Communicate clearly and consistently with other team members across shifts.
- Reinforce client care plans, recovery goals, boundaries, program expectations, and therapeutic recommendations established by the clinical team.
- Facilitate approved psychoeducational groups, recreational activities, recovery-focused activities, community meetings, and other structured programming as assigned.
- Maintain appropriate professional boundaries with clients and families at all times.
- Uphold client confidentiality and adhere to all policies and procedures.
- Participate in ongoing training and development opportunities as assigned.
- Other related duties as assigned by the Operations Manager.
Requirements and Qualifications:
- Diploma or degree in Mental Health, Addictions, Community Support, Social Work, Human Services, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
- Previous experience working with individuals experiencing substance use disorders, mental health concerns, concurrent disorders, or other complex needs is preferred.
- Current and valid driver's licence and satisfactory driver's abstract.
- Demonstrated ability to respond to crises in a calm and effective manner.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to establish supportive relationships while maintaining professional boundaries.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of an interdisciplinary team.
- Strong observation, documentation, conflict-resolution, and problem-solving skills.
- Valid First Aid/CPR and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training, or willingness to obtain as a condition of employment.
- Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check required.
- Bilingual proficiency in English and French is considered an asset.
