EIPS is recruiting a permanent full-time Architectural Technologist with our Facility Services department.
Facility Services is located in the Elk Island Public Schools Central Services building is located in Sherwood Park, at 683 Wye Road. Providing services for the Division, Central Services is comprised of eight departments, in addition to the Board of Trustees. The departments include Education Executive, Communication Services, Facility Services, Student Transportation, Human Resources, Financial Services, Supports for Students and Information Technologies. Central Services is staffed by 190 employees.

JOB SUMMARY
The Architectural Technician is responsible for developing and maintaining accurate school and building floor plans for Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) which involves collaborating with stakeholders for the collection, analysis, and reporting of technical information including spatial data related to district land assets. The position supports efficient space management through the maintenance and monitoring of school space inventory including instructional space and utilization data; reporting on utilization changes; and opportunities for external partnerships. The position supports a collaborative, respectful, and efficient work environment that contributes to the department’s overall success.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Floor Plan and Spatial Data Development
- Develop and maintain accurate and detailed floor plans of EIPS schools, including measurements of gross area and instructional area, to support reviews and assessments.
- Collaborate with administration, schools, and external consultants as required to ensure comprehensive data collection and entry processes.
- Collaborate with consultants to ensure drawings meet Division standards and building codes.
- Implement / incorporate additional spatial data such as building floor plans related to district land assets and future sites.
- Ensure comprehensive and up-to-date data on district land assets by conducting regular data collection, verification, and maintenance activities.
- Conduct site visits to monitor changes in school spaces and update floor plans that accurately represent the layout, dimensions, and features of each space within the school, including mechanical areas and site plans.
System, Space Review and Support
- Work closely and provide recommendations to gather accurate information and input for floor plans and system recommendations.
- Collect and maintain data on school space inventory including identifying instructional space, and conditions of the the space.
- Monitor and report on space utilization data, recent space changes, and spatial data related to EIPS’s building and land assets.
- Identify available space within EIPS schools for potential partnerships or external tenants.
- Support department staff and administration by providing data and information for space planning and allocation discussions.
- Assist with basic project management activites such as scope development, fit tests, and collaborate on concept designs in support of space planning and internal projects.
Communications
- Prepare information for various department strategic planning documents including the Three-Year Capital Plan, Ten-Year Facilities Plan, Three to Five Year Infrastructure Maintenance and Renewal (IMR) plan and other documents/reports as needed.
- Liaise with outside agencies including other school jurisdictions, government officials and municipal partners for information exchange.
- Prepare data and assist with reports, presentations, and planning documents.
- Respond to information requests from schools, central departments including Finance, OH&S and IT, and external stakeholders.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Diploma in Architectural Technology or related areas.
Experience
- Minimum Required: 0-3 years of related experience.
- Prefered: Experience with computer aided design (CAD) software.
Minimum Required:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of Alberta Building Code, regulations, and standards.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in developing floor plans and proficiency in CAD drawings.
- Ability to interpret civil, structural, electrical, and mechanical drawings.
- Knowledge of spatial data management and implementation.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills to support data accuracy and reporting.
- Effective communication and collaboration skills to work with department staff, administration and schools, and external consultants.
- Skills in prioritization, organization, and time management.
- Ability to successfully work in a team environment as well as independently with minimal supervision.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite with advanced Excel skills, web-based applications, and emerging technology
Preferred:
- Understanding of BIM (Building Information Modeling) programs.
- Experience in GIS (ESRI and QGIS).
- Knowledge of calculating and verifying essential data tables used for submission to the Government of Alberta
Minimum Required:
Qualifications, Certifications and Designations
- Valid Alberta Driver’s License in good standing as per the requirements of the Elk Island Public Schools Vehicle and Equipment Operating Manual and access to a reliable vehicle.
Preferred:
- Project Management Certification (PMP)
- Certified Technician Designation (C.Tech).
