Senior Litigation Law Clerk, Partner's Desk
Private wealth and estates litigation | Downtown Toronto litigation boutique
Hybrid, three days in office | $80,000 to $90,000 base plus discretionary bonus
Envy Consulting has been engaged by a highly regarded Toronto litigation boutique to find an experienced litigation law clerk. The role supports one senior partner with a national reputation, on a dedicated basis. You will not be shared across desks. This is not a role for someone who wants to grow into associate-style drafting or build an eDiscovery practice. It is a role for a seasoned clerk who is very good at running a litigation desk and wants to do that work for a partner who is organized, respectful and does not run on last-minute panic.
The work
- Civil files with a private wealth focus: high net worth family and estate disputes, professional negligence, and general commercial claims
- Full ownership of file logistics: pleadings index, bring-forward system, court filings and service, liaising with court registry staff, coordinating examinations for discovery, motions, hearings and trials
- Drafting procedural documents: cost outlines, bills of costs, notices of motion, affidavits for motions
- Preparing and maintaining books of authorities, production logs, document collection and Relativity uploads
- Working with the partners and associates on each file. This desk does not deal directly with clients.
How the desk runs
- The partner meets with her clerk every Monday morning to set the week
- Trial materials are expected two weeks before trial. Nothing is a fire drill.
- Overtime is rare. When trials are on, flexibility is expected, and it is returned in kind the rest of the year.
- A separate executive assistant manages the partner's calendar and personal logistics, so this role stays focused on the files
- Reception coverage is handled by a third party. Clerks and assistants are never pulled to the front desk.
What the firm is looking for
- Minimum 5 years of civil litigation clerk experience in Ontario, ideally 7 or more, with real Superior Court experience. Personal injury and insurance defence backgrounds will not be a fit for this desk.
- Strong working knowledge of the Rules of Civil Procedure
- Law Clerk diploma or certificate. ILCO certification is an asset.
- Calm under pressure, confident, and comfortable saying "I don't know, let me find out." High stakes files with a high profile partner reward composure, not nerves.
- Collaborative by instinct. The firm's bonus is tied to how well people help each other, not to individual output.
- Comfortable with technology. The firm uses Harvey, Microsoft Copilot and AI-assisted docketing, with clear guardrails, and expects clerks to keep up.
- Advanced Adobe and Microsoft 365. iManage and Soluno experience is an asset.
What you get
- Base salary of $80,000 to $90,000 depending on experience, plus a discretionary annual bonus
- Hybrid schedule, three days in a newly built downtown office
- Three weeks' vacation, negotiable for the right candidate, and three additional wellness days
- Extended health and dental, a health care spending account, and a $500 annual wellness credit
- $2,000 per year toward education and professional development
- RRSP contribution after one year
- Catered hot lunch twice a week and Monday breakfast for everyone in the firm
Hours are Monday to Friday, 8:30 to 4:30 or 9:00 to 5:00.
Why this desk
The firm has had almost no turnover in the past two years and hires for fit above everything else. If you are a strong clerk who is tired of being overworked and undervalued and wants a desk where the partner is prepared, the team shares the load and the culture is real, we would like to talk.
