About GenCore Utilities Ltd.
At GenCore Utilities Ltd., we power communities through innovative, sustainable, and technically advanced solutions across the telecommunications, utility, and energy sectors. Our design and engineering teams are at the forefront of network modernization, delivering projects that connect people and infrastructure efficiently and responsibly.
Position Summary
GenCore Utilities Ltd. is seeking an experienced Senior Dry Utility Modeler with extensive experience delivering Civil 3D models for major LRT, subway, and rail transit projects.
The successful candidate must already be proficient in Civil 3D rail and utility modelling, including rail alignments, corridors, utility crossings, cable containment, duct banks, pipe networks, and Subassembly Composer. They must be capable of independently setting up models, resolving technical issues, checking deliverables, and leading a team of designers.
This person will serve as GenCore’s technical resource for transit utility modelling, establish consistent production standards, and provide practical training and mentorship. Candidates must demonstrate that they have applied the required workflows on live projects and can lead delivery with minimal technical supervision.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the preparation and coordination of dry utility models for electrical distribution, telecommunications, streetlighting, traffic systems, CCTV infrastructure, and associated transit interfaces.
- Establish project templates, coordinate systems, file structures, data shortcuts, reference models, catalogues, and modelling procedures.
- Coordinate utility models with rail alignments, track corridors, station platforms, structures, drainage, and other infrastructure.
- Lead utility crossing reviews, clash detection, clearance checks, and constructability coordination with the responsible engineers and project stakeholders.
- Apply project design criteria established by the responsible rail and utility engineers when developing and checking models.
- Assign work, plan modelling effort, monitor progress, and review deliverables against project schedules and submission requirements.
- Perform model and drawing quality reviews; troubleshoot modelling problems and verify that comments and coordination issues are resolved.
- Train and mentor designers through demonstrations, practical exercises, model reviews, and documented workflows.
- Prepare coordinated plans, profiles, sections, quantity take-offs, and construction documentation, including updates arising from design changes and as-built information.
Required Civil 3D Technical Expertise
Candidates must demonstrate practical proficiency in the following:
- Core Civil 3D workflows: Data shortcuts, file sharing, surfaces, alignments, profiles, profile views, assemblies, subassemblies, and corridor creation.
- Rail geometry: Rail alignments, common stationing, cant calculations, turnout and crossover alignments, rail profiles using design checks, and profiles developed from superimposed profiles.
- Rail lines and platforms: Creating, editing, and exporting rail lines and platform edges.
- Rail corridors: Developing and editing rail assemblies, double-track subassemblies, mainline corridors, and multiple rail spur regions.
- Cable containment and duct banks: Configuring templates and catalogues and using corridors to model containment ducts, duct banks, and utility crossings.
- Pipe networks: Managing catalogues and parts lists; creating networks from objects; editing pipes, structure locations, orientations, and frame heights; generating alignments from networks; and displaying networks in profile views.
- Pressure pipe networks: Creating and editing networks, working with pipe runs in profile views, and modelling vertical bends for utility coordination.
- Sections and quantities: Creating sample lines, cross-sections, and section views; plotting sections; and generating earthwork and material quantities.
- 3D modelling: Applying extrusion and subtraction techniques to represent utility infrastructure and resolve complex interfaces.
- Subassembly Composer: Applying Civil 3D Subassembly Composer to rail modelling workflows and developing, modifying, and troubleshooting subassemblies.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- Diploma or degree in Engineering Technology, CAD/BIM, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Minimum 8 years of relevant infrastructure modelling or utility design experience, including at least 5 years directly delivering major transit projects.
- At least 2 years leading designers or modellers, with responsibility for technical reviews, work allocation, and mentoring.
- Demonstrated experience delivering coordinated rail and utility models through design submissions and construction support.
- Strong understanding of transit project requirements, utility owner standards, BIM execution plans, model sharing, and revision control.
- Ability to explain modelling workflows clearly, identify errors in others’ work, and independently resolve complex Civil 3D issues.
- Experience with Navisworks, Revit, Bentley OpenRail, MicroStation, Autodesk Construction Cloud, or ProjectWise is an asset.
Application Requirements
Applicants should identify their transit projects, modelling responsibilities, software used, deliverables completed, and team leadership experience.
Shortlisted candidates may be asked to demonstrate Civil 3D rail and utility modelling, troubleshoot a model, review sample deliverables, and explain how they would train and guide other designers.
Salary Range
Annual base salary: CAD $65,000–$90,000, depending on demonstrated transit project expertise, Civil 3D proficiency, and team leadership experience. Benefits and any bonus are additional.
What We Offer
