Position Summary
Under the general direction of the Manager, Systems and Infrastructure, the Systems Administrator is responsible for the implementation, administration, maintenance, monitoring, and support of enterprise systems infrastructure in a multi-site, 24x7 environment. Working as part of a large IT team, the Systems Administrator provides operational support for servers, virtualization platforms, cloud services, identity systems, endpoint management technologies, and related infrastructure. This role is responsible for maintaining the stability, security, and performance of assigned systems through proactive monitoring, troubleshooting, patching, and lifecycle management activities. The Systems Administrator collaborates with senior technical staff, project teams, vendors, and business stakeholders to implement infrastructure solutions, support operational initiatives, and deliver reliable, secure, and highly available IT services. The role actively participates in change management and adheres to established standards, procedures, and governance requirements.
Key Accountabilities
Infrastructure Administration & Support:
• Administer, maintain, monitor, and support assigned systems and infrastructure, including servers, virtualization platforms, cloud services, storage, Active Directory, Microsoft Azure and Microsoft 365, endpoint management platforms, security tools, and virtual desktop environments.
• Perform system maintenance activities including patching, upgrades, configuration management, and performance tuning.
• Monitor infrastructure health and respond to alerts, incidents, and service requests in accordance with operational procedures.
• Troubleshoot and resolve infrastructure, hardware, software, and operating system issues, escalating complex issues when required.
• Participate in after-hours on-call rotations and work non-standard hours as necessary to support business operations.
• Maintain system availability and performance by following established support, maintenance, and recovery procedures.
System Implementation & Operational Projects
• Assist with the deployment, configuration, testing, and support of new infrastructure solutions and system enhancements.
• Work with senior technical staff to implement infrastructure designs, standards, and technology initiatives.
• Participate in project activities including requirements gathering, implementation planning, migration activities, testing, and operational handover.
• Support infrastructure modernization initiatives and technology refresh programs.
• Contribute technical expertise during system upgrades, integrations, and operational improvement projects.
Security, Resiliency & Business Continuity
• Support backup, disaster recovery, monitoring, and security solutions to ensure business continuity requirements are met.
• Participate in disaster recovery testing and validation activities.
• Assist in maintaining security compliance through patch management, vulnerability remediation, access control administration, and adherence to security standards.
• Identify operational risks and recommend improvements to increase reliability, security, and supportability of systems.
• Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives focused on operational efficiency and service quality.
Collaboration & Continuous Improvement
• Collaborate with System Administrators, Senior System Administrators, project teams, vendors, and business stakeholders to support infrastructure services and initiatives.
• Share knowledge and contribute to team development and operational consistency.
• Participate in technical discussions, problem-solving activities, and service improvement initiatives.
• Support the development and maintenance of operational standards, procedures, and best practices.
Change Management & Documentation
• Follow established change management processes, including implementation planning, testing, validation, communication, and back-out procedures.
• Create, update, and maintain system documentation, operational procedures, and knowledge base articles.
• Participate in the Change Advisory Board (CAB) and change review processes as required.
• Ensure changes and operational activities comply with organizational standards, policies, and governance requirements.
Education and Qualifications:
- Post-secondary education in IT or a suitable combination of education and experience
- 3-5+ years of progressive experience in systems administration and enterprise infrastructure support roles.
- Demonstrated experience administering and supporting enterprise infrastructure technologies.
- Working knowledge of a majority of the following technologies in an enterprise environment: o Virtualization platforms such as VMware ESXi and Nutanix AHV o Microsoft Windows Server operating systems o Enterprise server hardware (Dell PowerEdge, Lenovo ThinkSystem, Nutanix HCI) o Microsoft Active Directory services (DNS, DHCP, Group Policy) o Microsoft Azure cloud services o Azure AD / Entra ID, Microsoft 365, and identity technologies (SSO, MFA, Conditional Access) o Disaster recovery and replication technologies (Commvault, Zerto) o Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops o PowerShell scripting and automation o Endpoint management platforms (MECM, Intune) o Infrastructure monitoring tools (SolarWinds, Dynatrace, Datadog, etc.)
- Experience supporting infrastructure changes and following formal change management processes.
- ITIL knowledge and industry certifications (Microsoft, Azure, Citrix, Nutanix, ITIL) are considered assets.
