Your New Company
Our client is a well-established, independent, full-service Toronto law firm with more than a century of history. The firm combines the resources and sophistication of a larger practice with the agility and accessibility of a mid-sized firm. Its culture emphasizes collaboration, professional development, initiative and ensuring employees have opportunities to grow their careers.
They are currently seeking a Litigation Legal Assistant / Floater to join their Toronto team and provide support across their busy litigation practices.
Your New Role
As a Litigation Legal Assistant / Floater, you will provide high-quality administrative and legal support to lawyers across the firm's litigation team, with a particular focus on civil and commercial litigation.
This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career Legal Assistant looking to strengthen their litigation experience while gaining exposure to different lawyers, files and working styles.
You will assist with preparing, revising, formatting and proofreading pleadings, correspondence and other legal documents; manage calendars and litigation deadlines; coordinate examinations, meetings and other appointments; prepare and organize materials for court proceedings; assist with the filing and service of court documents; maintain electronic and physical files; and manage general correspondence and administrative requirements.
As a floater, you will also provide coverage for Legal Assistants during absences and periods of increased workload. You'll need to be adaptable, organized and comfortable stepping into different desks while quickly determining each lawyer's priorities and preferred working style.
What You'll Need to Succeed
You will have at least one year of Legal Assistant experience, ideally within civil litigation, commercial litigation or another litigation-focused practice.
You will have a solid understanding of litigation terminology, legal documentation and court procedures, along with strong Microsoft Office skills. Experience with document management systems, court filing platforms and legal practice-management technology will be an asset.
You're someone who is highly organized and detail-oriented, communicates professionally and can comfortably manage competing priorities and deadlines. Because this is a floater position, adaptability will be particularly important. You should enjoy working with different personalities and be able to quickly understand what each lawyer needs from you.
Most importantly, you'll bring a positive, collaborative attitude and a willingness to continue learning and developing your litigation skills.
What You'll Get In Return
You'll receive a competitive salary of $50,000 to $70,000, depending on your experience, together with three weeks of vacation from the outset and a benefits package paid fully by the firm.
You'll also join an established independent Toronto firm that publicly emphasizes ongoing learning, professional development and merit-based internal advancement opportunities. Gardiner Roberts LLP describes its employee offering as including competitive compensation, supportive benefits, recognition and meaningful opportunities for career growth.
The firm also supports employee engagement through social initiatives, with recent employee feedback referencing firm events including a summer party and Christmas celebration.
For someone early in their litigation career, the floater structure provides the additional benefit of exposure to different lawyers, practice styles and types of litigation, allowing you to broaden your experience while determining where you would ultimately like to specialize.
