Position summary
The Industrial Sandblaster prepares steel surfaces on pipes, fittings, tanks and fabricated components by abrasive blasting, so coatings and rubber linings bond properly and last. The role owns surface cleanliness and profile, and works closely with painters, rubber liners and Quality to meet specifications and production deadlines.
Key responsibilities
- Read and follow work orders, drawings and surface preparation specifications.
- Perform abrasive blasting to clean and prepare metal surfaces to the specified cleanliness and profile.
- Inspect surfaces before and after blasting, checking profile, cleanliness and defects; report issues to the supervisor.
- Set up, operate and maintain blast pots, hoses, nozzles, dust collection and abrasive recovery equipment.
- Monitor abrasive quality and air supply; replace worn nozzles and hoses.
- Move, position and mask parts before blasting, using cranes, hoists or forklifts when trained.
- Hand off prepared parts to painting or rubber lining promptly to prevent flash rust and contamination.
- Keep the blast area clean and organized (5S) and hand over job status at shift change.
- Identify and report equipment issues or quality concerns.
- Collaborate with team members to meet production deadlines.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Health & safety responsibilities
As a worker under Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), the Sandblaster must:
- Wear required PPE at all times, including a supplied-air blast hood, hearing protection, blast suit, gloves and CSA safety footwear (PPE provided; fit testing provided).
- Inspect blast equipment, hoses and deadman controls before each use; never bypass safety controls.
- Follow dust control, ventilation and housekeeping procedures to limit exposure to airborne dust.
- Follow lockout/tagout and confined space procedures where they apply.
- Handle and lift material safely, using cranes, hoists, forklifts or lift aids only when trained.
- Report hazards, near misses, injuries and equipment defects to the supervisor immediately.
- Participate in safety training, JHSC initiatives and workplace inspections.
Qualifications
Required
- Knowledge of surface preparation techniques, or willingness to learn.
- Ability to read and interpret work instructions and technical specifications.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
- Able to wear a blast hood and full protective gear for extended periods, including in confined spaces.
- Able to work rotating shifts and overtime as scheduled.
- Commitment to workplace safety and compliance.
Preferred
- Previous industrial sandblasting experience.
- Experience in mining, manufacturing or heavy industrial environments.
- Forklift or overhead crane experience.
Equivalent experience gained anywhere is considered; Canadian experience is not required.
Working conditions and physical demands
- Industrial blast area with exposure to dust, noise and vibration.
- Standing, bending, kneeling and working in awkward positions, including inside or around large components.
- Frequent lifting up to 23 kg (50 lb) unaided; heavier loads with hoists or lift aids.
- Rotating shifts, with overtime including occasional weekends during peak demand.
