The
Department of Medicine in the
Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a
Research Manager. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
This position reports to the Principal Investigator.
The Research Manager is a highly skilled senior scientist with a comprehensive understanding of the principles, concepts, technical aspects and practices essential to directing complex iresearch projects in the field of infectious diseases. The Research Manager's role will be multifaceted and include directing the research program well as managing local, national and international collaborative research projects.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
Project Direction and Leadership:
- Direct and manage the research program focused on qualitative and mixed-methods
- Develop, design, and implement research projects for summer students, graduate & post-doctoral students, as well as research staff
- Developed and implement scientific vision alongside the PI
- Establish and maintain multi-faceted research team
- Manage performance and development of individual team members to maximize success and motivation
- Oversee research progress and adjust project objectives as necessary
- Oversee development of technical protocols
- Contribute to departmental administration (organizing meetings, journal club, seminar series)
- Oversee the development and management of the lab budget
- Demonstrate fiscal responsibility with respect to cost of experiments and study activities, technology, external collaborations, and travel
- Direct project manager as needed to ensure lab operations meet all university compliance and regulatory guidelines
Staff Management:
- Responsible for working with Principal investigator to determine positions that would support the strategic goals of the co-designed Research group
- Manages the creation job profiles, hiring, and onboarding of staff
- Performs and engages staff in annual performance reviews
- When required, performs disciplinary, including terminations, actions
- Oversees the complete range of human resource management for operational staff
- Ensures all staff have a Hazard Assessments in place to reduce risk for their position
Use of technical knowledge & expertise:
- Serve as research lead on cross-functional laboratory, preclinical and clinical project teams; working as leader to design, plan and deliver multiple individual projects via team and matrix management
- Authoring or contributing to abstracts/manuscripts for publication and grants to maintain funding
- Oversee the development and validation of experimental methods
- Oversee the design, implementation, optimization for technical aspects of new research projects
- Provide expert oversight on technical matters
Qualifications / Requirements:
- PhD with five or more years of experience in a related field
- Experience hiring and managing staff in a unionized environment an asset
- Advanced knowledge of research administrative procedures is required
- Excellent leadership and organizational skills
- Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Self-directed, enthusiastic and honest in performance of duties
- Ability to manage time effectively and determine priorities as well as delegate tasks appropriately
- Experience with working with patient participants for qualitative and mixed-methods activities including focus groups and semi-structured interviews
- Hold a superior understanding of the University environment including the Business Administrative System (BAS) including PeopleSoft and Efin
- Successful grant writing skills with a track record of obtaining grant-funding
- Knowledgeable in writing medical/scientific research protocols
- Experience in writing medical/scientific literature for publication with strong scientific and academic writing skills required
- Proficiency with databases, database design, relevant statistical software and electronic medical records
- Knowledge of research design particularly with qualitative and mixed methods
- Experience in working with internal/external teams to manage and grow a project and/or program
