Duties and Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Public Service Manager, this position will be responsible for:
- assisting in the planning and delivery of customer services for all residents of the service area, including collection development, readers’ advisory, and reference.
- will actively develop and maintain contacts with community organizations and agencies and provide professional advice and assistance to community groups.
- promote library services through outreach and participation in community events, and cultivate community partnerships.
- planning, assessing, and delivering instruction and orientation programs to the public and staff, using information literacy skills in the use of resources including print and web related sources;
- training staff in the use of resources for reference and readers’ advisory;
- training staff in service-related skills, such as readers’ advisory and reference;
- planning, coordinating, and executing library programmes and book talks;
- troubleshooting for computer hardware and software issues;
- participating in and provide leadership for system-wide initiatives;
- assuming administrative responsibilities as delegated by the manager;
- assisting with programming for groups of all ages;
- for emergency situations in the absence of the manager;
- supervising non-union staff and volunteers as required;
- safety requirements such as securing the property, including locking, and the unlocking of library buildings will be a requirement of the position.
- carrying or lifting all library materials (such as books, DVD’s, equipment, etc).
- performing Occupational Health & Safety duties as outlined in the Corporation’s Health & Safety Program.
- performing other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Must have an ALA accredited Masters degree in Library Science and Information Studies or Ontario Ministry of Education equivalency and a minimum of one (1) year related work experience in a library environment;
- Must have the ability to travel to off site locations in a timely manner as required. If method of travel is by vehicle, a current valid and lawful Driver’s License is required in accordance with the Highway Traffic Act and must provide a driver’s abstract as a condition of employment.
- Must have excellent interpersonal, conflict resolution, and organizational skills;
- Must have effective oral and written communication skills;
- Must have the ability and the flexibility to manage assignments and changing tasks within a team environment;
- Knowledge and proficiency in the use business software and library computer applications, including searches on the Internet, as well as online databases;
- Fluency in a language or languages reflecting the cultural diversity of the City of Windsor is considered an asset;
- Must be able to work on weekends
