Required Skills & Experience
- 10+ years of progressive engineering experience, with the majority of that experience supporting custom automation, machine building, systems integration, automated tooling, or an automation OEM
- Active Ontario P.Eng. in Electrical Engineering
- 7+ years of hands-on electrical design and controls engineering experience for automated machinery, custom equipment, or tooling systems
- Demonstrated ability to develop complete PLC programs, including controls architecture, sequencing, interlocks, alarms, fault handling, safety integration, and startup
Advanced hands-on programming experience with Allen-Bradley and Siemens PLCs.
Strong experience designing, reviewing, and approving complete electrical and controls systems, including:
Control panel drawings
Electrical schematics
PLC and controls architecture
Machine safety circuits
Automation-related power distribution
Instrumentation and device drawings
- Experience reviewing, approving, and stamping automation-focused electrical drawings or engineering packages under Ontario P.Eng. requirements.
- Experience acting as a technical lead, technical authority, principal engineer, design authority, or senior escalation point
- Strong customer-facing technical leadership experience
Experience mentoring electrical designers, controls programmers, engineers, or other technical team members
Nice to Have Skills & Experience
PMP certification
Nuclear automation or nuclear tooling experience
Experience supporting automation projects for OPG, Bruce Power, BWXT, CNL, Kinectrics, or another nuclear organization
Job Description
Insight Global is seeking a Subject Matter Expert to support the design and delivery of custom automated tooling systems within the nuclear division of one of our engineering and automation clients. This individual will act as the senior electrical and controls technical authority across projects, providing hands-on leadership throughout electrical design, PLC programming, robotics integration, machine safety, commissioning, and technical problem-solving.
The successful candidate will have a strong career foundation in custom automation, ideally beginning in a hands-on role such as PLC Programmer, Controls Engineer, or Electrical Designer. This person must remain technically capable of designing complete automation systems, developing PLC programs from scratch, reviewing and stamping electrical engineering packages, and resolving complex controls and integration challenges.
This role is approximately 70% technical and 30% project-focused. Previous nuclear experience is considered an asset but is not required.
Responsibilities
Act as the electrical and controls Subject Matter Expert for custom automated tooling projects within the nuclear division
Provide hands-on technical leadership throughout concept development, detailed design, integration, testing, commissioning, and project closeout
Design, review, approve, and stamp automation-focused electrical engineering drawings and technical packages under Ontario P.Eng. requirements
Design and review control panel drawings, electrical schematics, PLC architectures, machine safety circuits, instrumentation drawings, and automation-related power distribution
Develop complete PLC programs from scratch using Allen-Bradley and Siemens platforms
Review PLC code, controls architecture, system functionality, and programming standards
Integrate PLCs, HMIs, robots, sensors, instrumentation, safety devices, drives, and other automation hardware
Support the integration of FANUC and ABB robotic systems into custom automation cells
Lead machine troubleshooting, debugging, startup, testing, and commissioning activities
Act as the senior technical escalation point for electrical, controls, robotics, machine safety, and commissioning issues
Provide technical guidance and mentorship to electrical designers, controls programmers, project engineers, and other engineering team members
Lead and participate in design reviews, technical risk assessments, FAT, SAT, equipment qualification, and system acceptance activities
Work directly with customers to understand technical requirements, communicate design decisions, and resolve project challenges
Coordinate with mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, controls, manufacturing, project management, and customer teams
Support project planning, scope definition, technical estimating, risk identification, scheduling, and engineering change management
Ensure automation systems meet applicable electrical, machine safety, customer, and engineering requirements
Pay Rate: $85/hr CAD - $115/hr CAD
