The DNR is seeking to hire one (1) permanent, full-time Wayfinding Supervisor at our central office in Saint Paul, MN. The days of work are Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 5:00pm.
This supervisory position provides statewide leadership and strategic direction for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Parks and Trails Division (PAT) Wayfinding Program. This supervisor ensures that signage systems and cartography across Minnesota’s state parks and trails are cohesive, accessible, and meet (or exceed) industry standards and aligned with agency priorities.
Responsibilities Include But Are Not Limited To
- Provides program direction and supervises the PAT Wayfinding program team (sign specialists and cartographer positions).
- Prioritizes, assigns, and ensures successful completion of sign and map projects.
- Develops and continually improves Wayfinding Program processes in collaboration with team.
- Collaborates with state parks and trails staff statewide.
- Serves as a statewide technical expert on sign planning, messaging, design and installation.
- Supports sign projects by assisting with project planning, graphic design, contracting, and other work.
- Participates in the evolution of the DNR Sign Manual and iconography.
- Keeps current with agency guidelines, federal and state laws, and other guidance related to signage and cartography.
- Responds to sign and map requests in a timely manner.
This position has a flexible work arrangement and may be eligible to telework on a part-time basis which is subject to change. If approved, the employee would be required to complete an annual telework agreement.
Minimum Qualifications
- Four (4) years professional experience managing projects, leading project teams, and graphic design.
- A Bachelor's or advanced degree in Natural Resources Management, Parks and Recreation, Natural Sciences, Interpretation, Graphic Design, Education, Communications, or closely related field may substitute for one (1) year of experience listed above.
- Supervisory or leadwork experience sufficient to interview and select staff, assign, schedule, direct, train, evaluate work performance, and discipline reporting program staff.
- Human relations skills to collaborate with others throughout the division, department and other agencies; maintain effective relationships with agency staff and vendors; resolve conflicts; influence and motivate staff compliance with wayfinding policies and guidelines; and contribute to a positive work environment.
- Communication skills sufficient to lead meetings, and present complex information in a clear and understandable manner to diverse work teams throughout the state.
- Organization and administrative skills to plan and implement diverse elements of work; to strategically prioritize, organize and implement efforts under various fiscal scenarios; to lead staff in both cartography and signage programs; and coordinate with site and program staff.
- Graphic design and software skills to design and edit wayfinding products in Adobe Creative Suite and recommend print materials.
- Demonstrated project management experience that includes managing large-scale projects; identifying and working with diverse teams; scoping and defining projects; implementing and tracking project steps; and achieving project goals.
- Written communication skills sufficient to develop sign messages; correspond with others and produce reports; produce employee manuals and guidelines; edit unit wayfinding products; follow agency editorial and plain language guidelines.
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of effective wayfinding signage, accessible design for signage, and electronic accessibility.
- Ability to treat employees inclusively in the areas of accommodation, accessibility, scheduling, expectations, individualized resource needs, training, and development.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's or advanced degree in Natural Resources Management, Parks and Recreation, Natural Sciences, Interpretation, Graphic Design, Education, Communications, or closely related field.
- One (1) year experience selecting print materials for signage, procuring printing services, procuring and providing installation oversight.
- Knowledge of state and federal sign requirements.
- Experience applying agency or corporate branding to design products.
Additional Requirements
This position requires an unrestricted Class D Driver’s license with a clear driving record; per DNR Fleet Policy, only those 18 years of age or older with a valid driver’s license may operate equipment and vehicles on behalf of the Agency.
