New Value Solutions, a national IT consulting company, is seeking a Senior Backend Developer to support the development of two pre-launch, AI-native software products. This is a hands-on senior individual contributor role with significant ownership of backend architecture, development, deployment, and ongoing operations.
The successful candidate will bring strong production Python experience together with practical experience building LLM-powered applications and agent-based systems. You will work as part of a small senior team using AI-assisted development tools as part of the day-to-day engineering workflow.
This opportunity is expected to begin as a 3-month contract/fractional engagement, with the potential to move into a permanent full-time position. Candidates must be located in the Greater Toronto area. The role is a hybrid working arrangement.
Responsibilities
- Own backend architecture and development across two AI-native products.
- Design and develop scalable APIs and backend services using Python and FastAPI.
- Build and enhance LLM-powered features, including tool-calling agents, agent routing, conversation memory, structured outputs, and RAG.
- Design and maintain PostgreSQL databases, schemas, migrations, and data access layers.
- Build secure, scalable multi-tenant services and real-time/data-processing capabilities.
- Support production deployment and operations, including CI/CD and cloud infrastructure.
- Maintain strong engineering practices around testing, documentation, security, and code quality.
Requirements
- 7+ years of backend software engineering experience.
- 3+ years of experience building production Python services, ideally using FastAPI or similar asynchronous frameworks.
- Hands-on experience developing LLM-powered product features or agent systems, beyond basic API integration.
- Strong PostgreSQL and relational database experience, including schema design, migrations, indexing, and query performance.
- Experience developing multi-tenant SaaS applications, including authorization, tenant isolation, and RBAC.
- Production experience with Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD, and infrastructure-as-code.
- Regular hands-on use of AI development tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, or similar.
- Strong written communication and documentation skills.
- Experience with Go, Temporal or similar workflow engines, RAG/vector search, real-time systems, and gRPC/Protobuf would be considered an asset.
If you have the necessary expertise and are able to work in a hybrid arrangement in the Greater Montreal area, please submit your resume. While we thank all candidates in advance for their application, only those shortlisted will be contacted.
