Note: The primary pay rate is based on the rate for an incorporated contractor who owns their own business. However, we will also consider applications from candidates interested in a T4 arrangement, where applicable.
Description
The Engineer in this role will support our clients Non-Integrated Areas Planning group in managing an increasing mechanical workload across capital projects, OMA work programs, and Owner’s Engineer review activities. The successful candidate will provide preliminary design, costing, inspection, and troubleshooting expertise for diesel generating station mechanical systems in an electric utility environment. Responsibilities include supporting diesel gensets (50 kW–2.8 MW), engine auxiliary systems, diesel fuel storage and transfer systems, HVAC and fire protection systems, and cranes, hoists, and other lifting devices, while working closely with operations staff, suppliers, contractors, and consultants.
Key Accountabilities
- Engineering Solutions & Design: Develop safe, compliant engineering solutions for medium-complexity projects, including preliminary design, conceptual layouts, and evaluating technical specifications.
- Asset Support: Provide specialized mechanical engineering support for diesel generating stations, focusing on:
- Diesel generator sets (50 kW to 2.8 MW).
- Engine auxiliary systems (starting, air intake, exhaust, cooling, and lubrication).
- Diesel fuel storage and transfer systems (tanks, pumps, filters, valves, piping, and spill containment).
- Powerhouse and enclosure HVAC and fire protection systems.
- Cranes, hoists, and other lifting devices.
- Project & Field Support: Assist project and operations management by proposing plan adjustments, reviewing contractor work, preparing progress reports, and coordinating schedules.
- Troubleshooting & Problem Solving: Resolve technical and field engineering challenges through independent study, analysis, and sound professional judgment.
- Stakeholder Coordination: Act as a key liaison, working closely with internal operations staff, external suppliers, contractors, and consultants.
- Professional Practice Compliance: Adhere to BC Hydro’s Professional Practice Management Plan and Quality Management Pillar, utilizing EGBC Permit to Practice and digital seal technology (Notarius) as required.
Qualifications
- A minimum of eight (8) years of progressive engineering experience in a relevant field, preferably within an electric utility or heavy industrial environment.
- Experience with preliminary design, costing, inspection, and troubleshooting of mechanical systems for diesel generating stations in an electric utility environment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with demonstrated ability to liaise effectively with operations staff, suppliers, contractors, and consultants.
- Experience supporting diesel generation mechanical systems, including diesel gensets, engine auxiliary systems, diesel fuel storage and transfer systems, HVAC and fire protection systems, and lifting equipment.
- Self-starter with the ability to work independently, identify priorities, and perform effectively with minimal direction.
- Demonstrated initiative with the ability to proactively identify issues, opportunities, and required actions.
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting capabilities, particularly when evaluating mechanical systems and technical issues.
- Ability to work effectively in ambiguous environments and apply sound judgment to advance work activities.
- Nice to Have
- Experience with diesel generation systems and related infrastructure.
- Familiarity with costing, inspection, troubleshooting, and maintenance activities associated with power generation assets.
- Experience using Microsoft Copilot or other AI-enabled productivity tools in a professional environment.
- Ability to use AutoCAD for conceptual design layouts and preliminary drafting activities.
- Education and Certifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (or a closely related engineering discipline
- P.Eng and will be required to Provide Proof of Permit to Practice, registered with EGBC when hired
Additional Information
- Every contractor must supply their own Windows 11 Laptop computer for the duration of the assignment.
- Every contractor must supply their own “Smart Phone”. This is needed to gain access to the Organizations network.
