WSG delivers specialized construction, commissioning, maintenance, and project support services to major industrial and energy projects across Canada and internationally. We are currently seeking an experienced HSSE Officer to support safe execution of high-risk field activities including pressure testing, line breaking, mechanical repairs, commissioning, and workshop operations.
Position Summary
The WSG HSSE Officer serves as the primary Health, Safety, Security, and Environmental representative for WSG field operations. This role is responsible for implementing and maintaining the WSG HSSE Plan, conducting field assurance activities, leading hazard assessments, verifying exclusion zones, managing Oxygen Deficiency Hazard (ODH) controls, supporting emergency preparedness, conducting inspections, and exercising stop-work authority whenever unsafe conditions are identified.
Key Responsibilities
- Implement and maintain the WSG HSSE Plan across all assigned work scopes.
- Conduct routine field assurance activities to verify compliance with project HSSE requirements.
- Lead and participate in hazard assessments, Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), and field-level risk assessments.
- Establish, verify, and monitor exclusion zones associated with high-risk activities.
- Ensure ODH controls are implemented, maintained, and communicated to affected personnel.
- Monitor pressure testing, line breaking, mechanical repair, commissioning, and workshop activities to ensure safe execution.
- Conduct workplace inspections, audits, and observations to identify and mitigate hazards.
- Verify compliance with project procedures, permits, isolations, and safe work practices.
- Support emergency response planning, drills, and readiness activities.
- Investigate incidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions and assist with corrective action implementation.
- Provide coaching and mentorship to supervisors and field personnel on HSSE expectations and best practices.
- Maintain accurate records of inspections, audits, observations, corrective actions, and safety statistics.
- Participate in daily coordination meetings, toolbox talks, and planning sessions.
- Exercise stop-work authority whenever unsafe conditions, acts, or situations present unacceptable risk.
- Promote a proactive safety culture focused on hazard recognition, intervention, and continuous improvement.
Qualifications
- Diploma, Certificate, or Degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Management, Industrial Safety, or a related field.
- Minimum 5 years of HSSE experience supporting industrial construction, commissioning, maintenance, or operations projects.
- Strong understanding of pressure testing, line breaking, energy isolation, confined space, hot work, and permit-to-work systems.
- Experience conducting incident investigations, field audits, and hazard assessments.
- Knowledge of applicable provincial and federal safety regulations and industry best practices.
- Strong communication, leadership, and conflict resolution skills.
- Ability to work effectively within a multi-contractor project environment.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and electronic HSSE reporting systems.
Preferred Qualifications
- CRSP, NCSO, or equivalent professional safety designation.
- First Aid certification.
- Incident Command System (ICS) training.
- Experience supporting LNG, oil & gas, mining, power, or major infrastructure projects.
- Familiarity with ODH monitoring and control programs.
- Previous experience supporting hydrostatic or pneumatic pressure testing programs.
