Location: Hybrid - Saskatoon, SK (Strongly Preferred) / Vancouver, BC / Alberta
About the Role
We are seeking a hands-on, security-minded Senior Systems & Cloud Engineer to own, modernize, and scale our enterprise server, identity, database, and cloud infrastructure.
Reporting to the IT Manager, you will play a critical role in bringing our IT server operations in-house from a Managed Service Provider (MSP) and establishing a robust, scalable hybrid infrastructure (on-premises + Microsoft Azure) as we transition our primary operations site from construction to active production.
This is a hybrid role that balances architectural design with direct technical execution. You will work side-by-side with our Senior Network Engineer to build, secure, and operate the compute, storage, identity, and data layers of our environment.
Key Responsibilities
- In-House Operation & Audit: Lead a comprehensive 90-day infrastructure audit to produce a gap register and 2-year infrastructure plan; drive the transition of server operations from our incumbent MSP with standard runbooks.
- Azure Cloud Engineering: Design, deploy, and manage our Azure cloud foundation - including landing zones, IaaS, governance, security controls, and cost optimization.
- On-Premises & Identity Infrastructure: Manage day-to-day operations for Windows Server, Active Directory, Microsoft Entra ID (hybrid sync), Group Policy, DNS/DHCP, and Active Directory Certificate Services (PKI).
- SQL Server Administration: Administer enterprise Microsoft SQL Server environments, including security, high availability, backup/restore procedures, performance tuning, and licensing.
- Virtualization & Disaster Recovery: Manage VMware/Hyper-V platforms and enterprise storage; define RPO/RTO objectives and run regular disaster recovery restore tests.
- OT/IT & Site Infrastructure: Support infrastructure integration across segmented IT/OT boundary environments and provide periodic infrastructure support for our northern site (occasional travel required).
- Security & Automation: Execute patching cycles, vulnerability remediation, and infrastructure automation using PowerShell (Bicep/Terraform automation is a strong plus).
Qualifications & Requirements
- 7+ years of hands-on experience in enterprise systems and cloud infrastructure engineering, preferably in heavy industrial, energy, mining, or complex operations environments.
- Proven Expertise In:
- Windows Server, Active Directory, Entra ID, and PKI administration
- Microsoft SQL Server performance, security, and high availability
- Microsoft Azure (IaaS, landing zones, cloud governance)
- Virtualization (Hyper-V or VMware) and enterprise backup solutions
- Automation: Proficiency in PowerShell scripting; experience with Infrastructure-as-Code (Bicep or Terraform) is an asset.
- Experience Assets: Prior experience transitioning from an MSP to in-house IT, greenfield builds, or scaling infrastructure from construction to full operations.
- Certifications (Preferred): Microsoft Azure Administrator (AZ-104) or Azure Solutions Architect (AZ-305).
- Travel & Screening: Ability to occasionally travel to remote sites and clear standard site security screening requirements.
Why Apply?
If you are an experienced engineer who thrives on having full ownership of an enterprise environment - building foundations from scratch rather than just maintaining the status quo - this project offers direct visibility, meaningful technical challenges, and major ownership over our IT roadmap.
