Take the lead on commissioning some of British Columbia’s most critical electrical infrastructure.
We are looking for an experienced Specialist Commissioning Engineer – Protection & Control (P&C) to provide technical leadership on complex projects that keep the electrical grid safe, reliable and resilient.
Based in Burnaby, this is a highly technical and hands-on role where you'll be responsible for ensuring P&C systems are properly installed, tested, commissioned and ready to go into service. You'll work alongside engineering, construction, field operations and Control Centre teams, solving complex problems and making decisions that have a direct impact on the reliability of the power system.
The role offers plenty of variety, with travel to sites throughout British Columbia and occasional travel across North America.
What you'll be doing
As a subject matter expert in P&C commissioning, you will:
- Lead the testing and commissioning of complex protection and control systems and equipment.
- Act as the Professional of Record (PoR) for commissioning results, providing technical approval of field testing and engineering deliverables.
- Develop and review commissioning and staging plans in collaboration with engineering teams and the Control Centre.
- Provide technical direction and oversight to field commissioning teams.
- Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues during construction and commissioning.
- Review and approve commissioning documentation, test results and deliverables.
- Participate in constructability reviews, project planning and technical forums.
- Establish and improve commissioning standards, procedures and best practices.
- Prepare signed and sealed engineering deliverables in accordance with EGBC standards.
- Work closely with Field Operations, Quality Management and project teams to identify risks and resolve issues efficiently.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to other engineers and team members.
- Lead meetings, present technical information and represent the commissioning team with internal and external stakeholders.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of engineering processes, workflows and quality practices.
Why this opportunity?
This is an opportunity for an experienced P&C professional to take on a high-impact technical leadership role across a major infrastructure portfolio.
You'll work on complex systems where your expertise, judgement and ability to troubleshoot genuinely matter. No two days are likely to look the same - you'll combine engineering, field work, project coordination and problem-solving while working with a broad range of technical specialists.
What we're looking for
You'll ideally bring:
- A Bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical Engineering from a Canadian-recognized university.
- Registration, or eligibility for immediate registration, as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with EGBC.
- 10+ years of progressive engineering experience in areas such as transmission systems, industrial control systems, cybersecurity or systems engineering.
- At least 4 years of experience leading and coordinating P&C commissioning on medium to large projects.
- Strong knowledge of transmission system operations and the multidisciplinary impacts of major projects.
- Significant hands-on experience with P&C commissioning.
- Experience in P&C design, protection settings or systems engineering would be an asset.
- Strong leadership, communication and technical writing skills.
- A solid understanding of project management principles.
- Experience with utility design practices and project delivery processes would be an asset.
Most importantly, we're looking for someone who enjoys solving complex technical problems, working collaboratively and taking ownership of commissioning outcomes.
What you'll receive
- Lifetime pension
- Comprehensive benefits package
- Minimum 15 paid vacation days
- Flexible work model, depending on role requirements
- Training and professional development opportunities
- The opportunity to work on major, technically challenging projects across British Columbia
