About The Role
The Lead Data Engineer at McKesson is a senior individual contributor within the Decision Intelligence organization. This role is pivotal in leading the design, development, and operationalization of scalable data engineering and analytics solutions across the Pharmaceutical Services and Solutions (PSaS) Business Unit. As a technical leader, the Lead Data Engineer combines deep hands-on engineering expertise with solution leadership, mentorship, and cross-functional influence. You will be responsible for end-to-end delivery of complex data initiatives, ensuring the reliability, performance, and scalability of data pipelines and products. This position offers an opportunity to work at the forefront of healthcare data transformation, enabling advanced analytics and machine learning use cases to improve healthcare outcomes.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess recognized expertise in data engineering and analytics within large, enterprise environments. A minimum of 10+ years of relevant experience and a degree or equivalent qualification is typically required. Proven ability to independently lead complex technical initiatives with minimal oversight is essential. Candidates should have experience influencing technical direction and mentoring other engineers without formal management responsibilities. A deep understanding of data architecture, ETL/ELT patterns, and large-scale data processing is necessary, along with strong stakeholder communication and collaboration skills. Technical proficiency in SQL, Python, scripting, and cloud-based data tools is also required.
Responsibilities
- Lead end-to-end technical delivery for complex data engineering initiatives or domains, ensuring alignment with enterprise data strategies.
- Serve as a senior technical point of contact for data engineering within cross-functional squads, providing guidance and expertise.
- Design and build scalable, reliable batch and real-time data pipelines across internal and external systems to support analytics and operational needs.
- Influence architectural decisions by collaborating with Data Architects and enterprise teams to ensure best practices and standards are upheld.
- Define and enforce engineering standards, patterns, and best practices to maintain high-quality data solutions.
- Mentor and coach data engineers through design reviews, code reviews, and technical development activities to foster growth and technical excellence.
- Ensure the quality, reliability, performance, and maintainability of data products, implementing testing strategies and operational best practices.
- Partner with Product Managers, Data Scientists, Analysts, and business stakeholders to translate analytical requirements into scalable, effective solutions.
- Promote automation and reusability across data engineering solutions to improve efficiency and reduce technical debt.
- Oversee the operational readiness of data pipelines, including observability, monitoring, and incident management.
- Identify technical debt proactively and lead efforts to remediate issues to ensure long-term sustainability of data solutions.
- Support advanced analytics and machine learning initiatives by optimizing data models and pipelines for performance and scalability.
- Communicate complex technical designs, trade-offs, risks, and outcomes clearly to non-technical stakeholders to facilitate informed decision-making.
