The Canal District is seeking an experienced and passionate Sous Chef to join our culinary leadership team at The Machine Shop, a landmark waterfront destination that includes restaurants, catering operations, special events, festivals, weddings, and live entertainment.

Position Summary
The Sous Chef supports the Executive Chef in the daily operation of all culinary activities within The Machine Shop and Canal District properties. This role provides leadership to kitchen staff, ensures consistent food quality and presentation, maintains food safety standards, and assists with menu execution, catering, purchasing, and inventory management.
The successful candidate will be a hands-on leader who can inspire a team while maintaining the highest standards of quality, efficiency, and guest satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities
Culinary Leadership
- Assist the Executive Chef in overseeing daily kitchen operations.
- Lead and supervise kitchen staff during service periods.
- Train, mentor, and develop cooks and culinary team members.
- Maintain a positive, professional, and team-oriented kitchen culture.
- Ensure consistent execution of recipes, plating standards, and portion controls.
Food Production & Quality
- Prepare and oversee the preparation of menu items to established standards.
- Monitor food quality, presentation, and consistency.
- Support menu development and seasonal feature creation.
- Assist in executing banquet, catering, wedding, and special event menus.
Operations & Administration
- Assist with inventory control and ordering of food and kitchen supplies.
- Support cost control initiatives including food waste reduction and labour efficiency.
- Participate in scheduling and staffing plans.
- Maintain accurate records and kitchen documentation.
Food Safety & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with all health, safety, and sanitation regulations.
- Maintain HACCP and food safety standards.
- Ensure proper storage, handling, and rotation of food products.
- Promote a clean, organized, and safe kitchen environment.

About The Canal District

Required Skills
- Minimum 3 years of culinary leadership experience in a restaurant, hotel, catering, or banquet environment.
- Red Seal Certification considered an asset.
- Strong knowledge of food preparation techniques, kitchen operations, and inventory management.
- Experience with high-volume service and catering operations.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Food Handler Certification required.
